For so long cricket as a sport in the United States was just another sport, with a small fan following and an even smaller name in World cricket. But now, that is all set to change, as the USA Cricket Association announces the first and second USA All American Under-19 teams.
The first all American XI will represent USA at ICC’s All Americas Under-19 World Cup, in the regional qualifier that will be held in July in Toronto. The top two winning teams from this regional tournament will make the grade into the Global Qualifier, which is a tournament for global associates also to be held in Toronto this September. The top five teams in the Global Qualifier then get a chance to play in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2010. The U-19 World Cup held once every two years features national U-19 teams from sixteen countries - 10 full members and six qualifying associates. The USA Cricket Association also announced a Second All-American XI that will serve as a reserve pool for the first team. It will contribute 7 reserves to the First All-American XI. Shiva Vashishat, who was captain of the North West team at the USA U-19 National Championship, has been named as the captain for the First All-American XI, and Gregory Sewdial of New York, the vice captain. For USACA's CEO Don Lockerbie, being recognized as an All-America youth cricketer is an honor reserved ‘only for those players who demonstrate the commitment, skills and temperament indicative of being selected to represent the United States of America at the national level’. Addressing the boys at the concluding ceremony of the national U-19 championship, Lockerbie spoke of the numerous opportunities that these young boys would have in the arena of international cricket if they played dedicatedly now. Speaking of the chance they have to make it to the U-19 World Cup in 2010 Lockerbie said: "You are the foundation of our future." "And in six years, we hope to also be in the 2015 World Cup. In six years, you guys will be old enough to be on that team. So work hard, take this All-American opportunity, this chance to play in the finals, to win the finals, to be runner-up, go for it hard because the future of US cricket is bright and we're going places."
