Somehow Australia have never been able to carry their world domination of cricket into the Twenty20, and this year they are hoping to do much better. Brad Haddin, who has captained the team on two earlier occasions, wants them to build confidence and use the next few days along with the practice matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand to tune in to the game for real, before the ICC World Twenty20 kicks off on the 6th of June.
"The energy the guys have shown and enthusiasm has been quite good, so we're actually looking forward to getting our teeth into the game," Haddin told AP. "With these games you want to get out of it as an individual what you can so you go into the first world game with some confidence and a bit of rhythm under your belt. We haven't won this tournament before so we're pretty keen to make our mark ... it's obviously one piece of silverware we don't have." According to Haddin, the charm of Twenty20 cricket lies in its unpredictability, that there is "no real form guide": "Any team on a given day can make a mark in the competition because it only takes five overs to turn the game in your favour… There are no stand-out favourites, so I think it will be an enjoyable tournament and it will be very good viewing for the fans." In the performance that won the man-of-the-match award, Warner demolished South Africa’s bowling attack with seven fours and six sixes in his action packed innings to finish just 11 runs short of becoming only the second player after Chris Gayle to score a Twenty20 International century. Ricky Ponting said later that it was like hiving Gilchrist back on the team: "He hit some huge sixes tonight when I was out there, it was some of the sweetest hitting I've seen," Ponting said. "It was like having 'Gilly' there again." Warner himself said of his hitting, "It's not like I'm trying to hit every ball into the next suburb, basically, if it's in my area, I'm not going to hold back… If it's ball one or the last ball of the day, I'm still not going to hold back. I know when to be more careful, but basically, I want to score off every ball. "I just have to back myself. You get a good start and the crowd starts going and you want to keep going on the roll." Australia take on West Indies on June 6th at the Oval.
