The Men in Blue under the Captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni will find it difficult to defend the title as they are no more underdogs like they were in 2007. Higher expectations and tough competition will test Dhoni’s men to the extreme limit.
MS Dhoni (Captain) Age: 27 Pressure – the word doesn’t seem to be their in the India’s Captain Cool’s dictionary. He has got all the weapons in his armour; the only challenge is to fight with the best combination. Virender Sehwag Age: 30 He replica of the character Mask (Jim Carey – remember guys?) with the only difference – he does not need the mask to go mad. A one man army in true sense as when he fires, even the opposition admires. Gautam Gambhir Age: 27 The Run Machine of the T20 World Cup 2007. Again a long rough phase is haunting him. May be his form is waiting for Viru to fire. Higher expectations due to amazing track record in T20s. Harbhajan Singh Age: 28 Mind over Body. His physique may not scare the position but his twists and turns can send any playing XI for a spin. The most experienced campaigner after Zaheer; has his form going good overseas. Ravindra Jadeja Age: 20 The Emerging Young Talent. A handy bowler, evolving middle and lower middle order batsmen and a sharp fielder. Always trying to give more than 100%. Tough to get a chance in playing XI in the English Conditions. Age: 30 The bowling spearhead. Well aware of the English Conditions through his successful County Cricket Experience. Right now recovering from a shoulder injury. Praveen Kumar Age: 22 The Fox – cunning and deceptively sharp. Can take the batsmen with his swinging abilities rather than the pace. Irfan Pathan Age: 24 DLF IPL 2009 gave him a comeback chance and he proved his capabilities more than expected. Will have to compete for a place in the playing XI as IPL and World Cup – both are different ball games. Yusuf Pathan Age: 26 The evergreen surprise package. He can win matches on his own – whether it is his batting abilities or bowling. Suresh Raina Age: 22 The potential to become T20’s Sachin Tendulkar. Grown from a classy batsman to a blistering stroke-maker. Ability to capitalise on the platform expected to be set by Sehwag and Gambhir. Ishant Sharma Age: 20 As expected, he has delivered it in the practice matches though he had a rough patch in the IPL Season 2. The pace, the ability and the experience of seniors like Zaheer will keep him going for long for Team India. Beware of injuries is required. RP Singh Age: 23 The Indian wicket taking machine for the moment after being IPL 2009’s most successful bowler. Still needs to cement a place in the team as the practice matches just didn’t go his way. Rohit Sharma Age: 22 The Finisher – the Slogger – the Opener. Proving almost everytime his Captain and Team expects. The best batsmen (on the basis of current form) for the T20 format. Yuvraj Singh Age: 27 Once again a fight for him is evolving in terms of staying there in the playing XI as his rough batting phase been for quite long. The legacy of six sixes in the last World Cup is calling him. Pragyan Ojha Age: 22 Even though he deserves a place in the team, he still needs to be fit in the Team. The best partner for Bhajji, MSD will need to re-think his strategy if he needs to play Ojha in place of a seamer but more likely MSD will keep his faith on the part-timers going.
