It is only a couple of weeks that Andrew Symonds toasted to the win of the Deccan Chargers in the IPL Season 2 which concluded in South Africa on May 24th. But problem with Symonds is that his alcoholism contributed to his demise. Andrew Symonds who goes with nickname Roy per Ponting was given plenty of opportunity and that Cricket Australia did a lot for him before banishing him from the ICC Twenty20 World Cup.
It is understandable that this was a tough decision for Cricket Australia because Symonds is such a talented player. Nevertheless Cricket Australia has to care about its image as the player it promotes reflects its choice of players on young Australians. Symonds saga is nothing new for Cricket Australia. James Sutherland had warned Symonds four years ago in England that if he ever tried to misbehave his contract would be torn into pieces. Yet he almost is a repeat offender now and has crossed the lines at least on four occasions and his contract was still intact. As per sources, Andrew Symonds has never been the same player and should have never got a recall to play for Cricket Australia. Ian Healy believes that he might be looking his way out of cricket and perhaps looking for an excuse to get out. Remember IPL and county cricket is adequate dose for him and have put out serving the country on the back burner. Andrew’s Chronological Listing of Offenses: 2005: Showed up drunk before the ODI against Bangladesh in England, he was banned for 2 games. 2006: Wants to fight a Rugby player of Cheetah’s club and was kicked out of a night club. 2008: Did not care about a Team meeting and went fishing, you guessed it, he was sent home. 2008: Got into an argument in Brisbane with a pub patron. 2009: Sent to rehab over radio rant against Kiwi Brandon McCullum. Was banned from the tour of South Africa. 2009: Sent home from the Twenty20 World Cup in London, some guess that this might be the end of him. It reminds me of the motorist who got a speeding ticket in the morning and was caught speeding by the cops again the same afternoon, Motorist pleaded for mercy saying that he had got a speeding ticket this morning. To this the police officer replied that is strange that “You still have not learned your lesson” and neither has Symonds. He has indeed gone far too much far too long.
