Team India’s star batsman Virender Sehwag could not made it for even a single match in ICC T20 World Cup 2009 due to an injury which happened in IPL Season 2 in South Africa but aggravated in extreme climatic conditions (heavy rain and low temperature) in England.
It was definitely a mistake on part of Sehwag being the senior most player and vice captain of the team, that he neither took his injury seriously, this small mistake of being confident of getting recovered from an injury without knowing its seriousness, weakened Team India both mentally and team’s playing strength wise. "I had suffered the injury during our IPL semi-final clash against Team Hyderabad when I dived to stop a ball," he acknowledged. Also according to sources, Sehwag did not disclose his condition to the management till Team India landed in London on May 29. Even then, the physio and team management did not realise the seriousness of the injury and thought he would recover soon and will be fit to play in the World Cup matches even if he misses the couple of practice matches. The Break-Down of Entire Episode: May 29: Team India lands in England for T20 World Cup. May 30 – June 2: Virender Sehwag misses both the practice matches due to shoulder injury but the messages came out of his recovery and rest before the World Cup begins. June 3: Indian skipper MS Dhoni ambiguous about Sehwag’s shoulder injury says, "To be honest I don’t know when he'll be fit." Shows more optimism on Zaheer Khan’s recovery. June 5: Reports of rifts between Dhoni and Sehwag over the latter hiding his injury comes out. June 5: Same day, Team India comes out in a “Unity Parade” in the pre-match press meet. June 5: Continuing on the same day, Indian Team’ Coach Gary Kirsten confirms Sehwag has Grade-I tear in his shoulder which occurred during final stages of IPL Season 2 in South Africa. June 8: Sehwag misses practice session, Team India continues to cold shoulder media after rift reports. June 9: Finally Team India announces Sehwag’s departure from T20 World Cup and Dinesh Karthik’s inclusion inplace of Sehwag. Captain Dhoni refuses to comment on Viru’s injury. June 10: Sehwag admits about his injury before leaving from Nottingham for London after the announcement made by Team India on the previous day.
