Mumbai, September 14th, 2009: India won the Compaq cup final with a brilliant 138 from Sachin Tendulkar to beat Sri-Lanka in the finals of the tri-nation series. Harbhajan Singh's third five wicket haul cemented India's wining of the Compaq cup final.
India defeated Sri-Lanka by 46 runs as they came back from a 139 thrashing on Saturday which resulted in India slipping from its number one position. India's win was scripted by Sachin Tendulkar who added 95 runs for the opening wicket partnership with Rahul Dravid. Dravid was anchor to the early innings rotating strike to Tendulkar who dominated the innings. Tendulkar had partnerships of 110 with Dhoni and 71 runs with Yuvraj Singh to ensure that India erected a 300 plus total.
Sri-Lanka started off their 320 run case with a brisk start from Dilshan (42) and Sanath Jayasuriya (36). The opening pair averaged more than seven runs an over and had clearly start frustrating the Indians. Indian Captain, MS Dhoni smartly enacted to bring Harbhajan Singh into the attack and got rid of Dilshan breaking the crucial opening partnership. Harbhajan ended the match with figures of 5 for 56. The Indian captain was not very convinced with his team fielding performance and did not hold back his disappointment. He went on to say "We have got to learn from our mistakes and there were too many made on the field. It is crucial and more often than not you end up losing the game if you make as many mistakes as we did. But thanks to some solid performances from a few of the players we ended up on the winning side." He added "It feels good to win the series and it's very special for us because it comes after a long time here. But we cannot afford to make mistakes especially if we want to sustain the kind of performances that we have had in the recent past." Sri Lankan skipper Sangakkara hoped that his team did more with fielding and bowling, he went on to say "In the end it turned out to be a good game, but I thought there was a lot wanting from our fielding and bowling. As batsmen, I think we have to take more responsibility chasing totals - when you are in form you really need to maximize opportunities. But everyone batted well, we had a great start and Kandamby proved to be the lynch pin again. We were in the hunt until the 42nd over."
