Dhoni, Gambhir shine at ICC awards |

Johannesburg, Oct 1st, 2009: Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir were named as the ODI and the test player of the year at ICC awards ceremony in Johannesburg on Thursday night. However the best cricketer of the year award went to Mitchell Johnson of Australia who tool 80 wickets in 17 matches he played in the year and scoring 632 runs with an average of over 30. The awards account for players performance from August 13th, 2008 to August 24, 2009.
The race for the player of the year was tight but Johnson managed to get the top honors by beating Dhoni, Gambhir and England captain Andrew Strauss. Gambhir was nominated the best Test player as he scored 1269 runs from eight matches he played during the course of the year. MS Dhoni was been extremely consistent with his batting, got the consecutive ODI batsman of the year award. In the 24 ODIs that Dhoni played during the period he scored 967 runs nine fifties with an average of 60.43 with a strike rate of 86.62. Dhoni was also named the captain of both ODIs and Test teams of the year. Yuvraj Singh, Virendra Sehwag and West Indies cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul were close contestants for the ODI player of the year. Tillekratne Dilshan got the best twenty20 player of the year award.
