Mumbai, Dec 5th, 2009:  The stage for the Indian win had been set by Virender Sehwag’s heart stopping 293 which took him to edge higher than Don Bradman when it comes to triple-hundreds, Sehwag is the only who has got three triple hundreds.

But this was no ordinary win, this win took India to the top of the charts.  When Muralitharan was caught behind off Harbhajan Singh, signaling an innings victory and a 2-0 series win.  Sachin Tendulkar’s face showed it all, as he called the support staff and reserve players on to the field to share the moment.

Jubilant Tendulkar later said that he was inherently proud of team India’s achievements and was for the first time part of the team which was numero uno in test cricket.  Tendulkar speaking to the media said “It is fantastic to be the number one Test team, "I have been waiting a long time to get to this position. Not just me, but the entire country waited for it.  "The players have worked very hard over the last 18 months to get there and the coach has handled the team superbly."  Sunil Gavaskar said “I think Sachin was probably dying for this day. He started in 1989 and has completed 20 years in international cricket.   This is a big moment for Sachin. I would think this is as big as all his personal records.”

Since November 2007, India have won home series against Pakistan, Australia, England and Sri Lanka, won an away series in New Zealand, and drawn at home against South Africa.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said "The real tough job starts now to maintain this performance.  When we are pushed against the wall, we come out with special performances. It was a terrific team effort in the entire series. The batsmen got big scores, the bowlers bowled well in difficult conditions and our fielding was good.” He added "The important thing is to maintain this consistency in future."

Sri Lankan captain Jumar Sangakkara gave high numbers to team India in all aspect of the game.  He said "India outperformed us in all departments of the game in the last two Tests”.  "We nearly put 400 on the board, which is a good score, but Sehwag took the game away with his 293.

"The guys fought hard through the series but it was just not good enough."
