New Delhi, April 11: Bottom-placed Kings XI Punjab rose like a Phoenix again to conquer Delhi Daredevils to score an emphatic seven-wicket win in a low-scoring Match 44 of IPL 2010 at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium here on Sunday evening.
There were two run outs while left arm seamer Irfan Pathan took three wickets and leg spinner Piyush Chawla bagged two as Kings XI Punjab bundled out Delhi Daredevils to the lowest IPL total (111 in 19.4 overs) at the venue. This was second consecutive win for Kings XI Punjab, who had demolished Mumbai Indians in the previous match. The Kings XI Punjab is still placed at the bottom of the table with eight points from 11 matches. This was the fourth win for Kings XI Punjab. The Kumar Sangakkara-led Kings XI Punjab team raced off to the easy target of 112 in 18.4 overs. The win upset Delhi Daredevils’ plans, who suffered their fifth defeat from 11 matches. Delhi Daredevils, however, stay at the third spot behind Mumbai Indians (14 points) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (12 points) with 12 points. Mahela Jayawardene made a 35-ball 38 (4x4) while left-hander Sangakkara (33 off 30 balls) steered Kings XI Punjab to a clinical victory on a slow wicket. Pathan was out for 12. Earlier electing to bat, Virender Sehwag was out to a first ball duck. The dashing opener drove left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan uppishly into the waiting hands of Reetinder Singh Sodhi at short mid-wicket. But skipper Gautam Gambhir eased off the pressure by striking three fours off Pathan’s eventful over. But the left-hander, after scoring a 12-ball 26, was run out and Delhi Daredevils were 39/2 in 3.5 overs. This was for the third time that Gambhir has been run out this season. Then it became 41/3 as Aussie left-handed opener David Warner, too, was run out for 6. Leg spinner Piyush Chawla foxed England skipper Paul Collingwood (4) with a googly to win an lbw appeal to leave Delhi Daredevils struggling at 55/4 in 7.3 overs. Chawla’s googly also had New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori flummoxed, who was bowled for 2. Pathan came back and dismissed Dinesh Karthik (17) and Yuvraj Singh had the wicket of Rajat Bhatia to have Delhi Daredevils reeling at 81/7 in 15 overs. Mithun Manhas rescued Delhi Daredevils with a 28-ball 26, the team’s highest scorer, before death-over bowler Juan Theron bowled him. It was a poor batting display by Delhi Daredevils. Kings XI Punjab bowlers did a very good job in bowling out Delhi Daredevils for the lowest IPL total at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Left-arm seam bowler Pathan, who took three wickets in the last match, scalped three more today while Chawla had two. Delhi Daredevils’ left-arm swing bowler Ashish Nehra, who was nursing an injury, played his first match of the third edition. He replaced Pradeep Sangwan while Manhas came in place of Kedar Jadhav. Aussie speedster Brett Lee suffered a thumb injury and had to sit out forcing Kings XI Punjab to bring in South African pace bowler Juan Theron.
