New Delhi, April 18: Chaminda Vaas’ heroics and experience of over 300 ODI’s was brought to bear with the ball, particularly in the last over, as the Sri Lankan helped the Deccan Chargers tame the Delhi Daredevils. Last year’s winners the Deccan Chargers, thus, stormed into the Semi Finals with an 11 run victory in Match 55 of the IPL 2010 at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium here on Sunday night. Defending a modest target of 145, holders Deccan Chargers Hyderabad restricted the Delhi Daredevils 135/7 in 20 overs. Requiring 17 runs in the last over, Vaas conceded just five runs to emerge as the hero for the Deccan Chargers win. In a do-or-die battle, the Deccan Chargers scored their fifth win on the trot to jump to the second spot with 16 points from eight wins. They become the second placed team in the Semi Finals along with league leaders Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore both of whom qualified on a better net run rate. Delhi Daredevils slumped to their seventh defeat and failed to qualify for the Semi Final, which is the first time in three years at the IPL that the Delhi Daredevils have failed to qualify for the last four stage. They finished the league engagements with 14 points to be placed fifth in the table. The final inconsequential league match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders will be held tomorrow. Rohit Sharma held three brilliant catches and dropped a simple one. But in the end, Deccan Chargers Hyderabad held their nerves to eke out a close win. The experienced Vaas, who was brought back for this match, finished with figures of 4-0-19-1. Paul Collingwood, who was dropped thrice, made a valiant unbeaten 51 off 42 balls and added 48 runs in 4.5 overs with Ashish Nehra (16-ball 22 not out). Delhi Daredevils lost the pocket dynamo David Warner (5) in the second over. Warner edged Mitchell Marsh and Rohit Sharma took a fine catch at slips. Rohit Sharma got into the act again. This time he dived full length to his right at slip to pouch a brilliant catch to get rid of Virender Sehwag (8) off Chaminda Vaas’ bowling. Delhi Daredevils lost both the openers for 19 runs in 2.4 overs. Harmeet Singh had T Dilshan (11) lbw. Rohit Sharma held another superb catch at short mid-wicket to dismiss skipper Gautam Gambhir (4). The left-hander pulled left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and Sharma dived to his left to take a tumbling catch. Mithun Manhas was run out and Delhi Daredevils were in deep trouble (72/6 in 12.5 overs) when Dinesh Karthik was bowled by Ojha, who captured his 20th wicket of the tournament to retain the Purple Cap. Andrew Symonds’ blitzkrieg saw Deccan Chargers manage a respectable total of 145/7 in 20 overs. The big-hitting Symonds hammered 30-ball 54 (3x4, 5x6) and looked like taking the Deccan Chargers to a huge score. But little leg spinner Amit Mishra had the Aussie caught at long off after which the Deccan Chargers seemed to lose their way. Incidentally, the Deccan Chargers were off to a bad start too. Their skipper Adam Gilchrist (10) again failed. He was back in the pavilion in the second over, falling to left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra, who bowled very well. Tirumaletti Suman (5) was done in by medium-pacer Umesh Yadav who breached his defence. Yadav, who was struck for two successive fours, came back strongly to dismiss the dangerous Rohit Sharma, who was caught behind for 11. Opener Monish Mishra (25) was run out, thanks to a fine pick up and throw by Mithun Manhas at the non-striker’s end. Symonds played a cameo but Mishra terminated his innings and Deccan Chargers lost the momentum. Delhi Daredevils bowlers were very disciplined and were backed by the fielders, who made some brilliant saves. Young Mitchell Marsh could not find his way and was out for a 19-ball 13 to give Nehra his second wicket. Paul Collingwood dismissed Chaminda Vaas for 3. Deccan Chargers Hyderabad could not put enough runs in the end. Left-arm seamer Dirk Nannes bowled a tight four overs (22 runs) but young Umesh Yadav came up with impressive spell of 2 for 24. Mishra had 1/28. Deccan Chargers Hyderabad finally played Chaminda Vaas, who came in place of Ryan Harris while Harmeet Singh replaced RP Singh.
