Consolatory win for Kolkata Knight Riders against Mumbai |

Kolkata, April 19: Kolkata Knight Riders, who were out of contention for a place in the Semi Finals, scored a consolation nine-wicket win over table-toppers Mumbai Indians in Match 56 of IPL 2010 at Eden Gardens on Monday night.
With Mumbai Indians deciding to bat first, the Kolkata Knight Riders did not have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals as their run rate was just not good enough to bail them out. The Kolkata Knight Riders finished sixth on the leader board inspite of the win basis a poor net run rate, finishing after the third placed Chennai Super Kings (+0.274) and fourth placed Royal Challengers Bangalore (+0.219). The Delhi Daredevils (+0.021) too had a much superior run-rate than Sourav Ganguly's Kolkata Knight Riders (-0.341), who, too, finished their league engagements with 14 points from 14 matches.
The Semi Final line-up for IPL 2010 is thus complete with the table toppers Mumbai Indians taking on the fourth placed Royal Challengers on Wednessday, April 21 2010. The second placed Deccan Chargers will take on the third placed Chennai Super Kings the next day on April 22. Both Semi Finals, the third place play-off match and the Grand Final will be played at magnificent D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Skipper Sourav Ganguly and Brendon McCullum chased the modest target of 134 runs in 17.3 overs. They shared an opening stand of 97 runs. Ganguly was dismissed for 42 in the 14th over. But McCullum (57 not out off 56 balls; 8x4) and David Hussey (20 not out off 14 balls) completed the formalities in the `last league game of IPL 2010' to finish the season with a win. The Kolkata Knight Riders finished sixth in the table with 14 points.
Earlier, Shane Bond struck in the first over in Mumbai Indian innings. Aditya Tare was held by Murali Karthik in the off side and then in the third over Shikhar Dhawan was snapped behind. Mumbai Indians never really recovered from these early setbacks. The best partnership was produced by third wicket left-handed pair of J P Duminy and Saurabh Tiwary. The two added 63 runs in ten overs before Duminy fell to the left-arm seam of Jaidev Unadkat for 19 (27 balls). The tall Tiwary hit four fours and one six in his 37-ball 46. Left-arm spinner Murali Kartik later had Tiwary caught at mid-wicket.
Dwayne Bravo, who captained the side in place of Sachin Tendulkar, lasted only nine balls. He was stumped off Kartik for 5. Mumbai Indians batsmen struggled against a disciplined Kolkata Knight Riders attack. It was 89/5 in 15.4 overs. Rajagopal Sathish was out for 11 while Stuart Binny, playing in his first match scored 8. Ambati Rayudu produced a late flourish. He made 15-ball 27 before he was the last batsman dismissed and Mumbai Indians could muster 133/8.
Kolkata Knight Rider’s bowlers had done their job but it came a bit too late in the tournament. Skipper Sourav Ganguly used seven bowlers. But Bond (2/24) and Kartik (2/20) finished with impressive figures.
As expected, Orange Cap holder Sachin Tendulkar was rested, together with Kieron Pollard, Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan ahead of the all important First Semi Final on April 21st 2010. West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo led the Mumbai Indians side which included Shikhar Dhawan, Rajagopal Sathish, Ali Murtaza and Stuart Binny in the playing eleven. For Kolkata Knight Riders, Wriddhiman Saha and David Hussey came in place of Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Chris Gayle.
