Navi Mumbai, April 25: After being runners up in 2008, the Chennai Super Kings were second time lucky today as they emerged the IPL 2010 Champions defeating a spirited Mumbai Indians’ outfit led by Sachin Tendulkar by 22 runs in the Grand Final at the jam-packed D. Y. Patil Stadium on Sunday night. he Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings made 168/5 and restricted Mumbai Indians to 146/9. Left-hander Suresh Raina with a classy unbeaten 57 (35 balls) and later in the second innings, some brilliant bowling by Chennai Super Kings derailed Mumbai Indians’ plans. Doug Bollinger, who destroyed Deccan Chargers in the Semi Finals, tasted blood in his first over. Left-hander Shikhar Dhawan (0) was caught behind to give Chennai Super Kings a great start. But Sachin Tendulkar, whose first attacking shot was a sweep shot off off-spinner R Ashwin, batted majestically despite an injury to his right hand. Tendulkar and left-hander Abhishek Nayar were involved in a second wicket partnership of 66 runs. But Chennai Super Kings fought back into the match by dismissing Nayar (26-ball 27; 1x4, 2x6) and Harbhajan Singh, who was promoted as a pinch-hitter, in successive overs. Nayar, who survived two run out chances, went for a non-existent single and Dhoni did the rest from short mid-wicket. Harbhajan was trapped in front by Raina. But left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati struck twice in the 15th over. Tendulkar (45-ball 48, 7x4) was caught at long-off while left-hander Saurabh Tiwary was superbly taken by a diving Raina at deep mid-wicket. Mumbai Indians had their back to the walls at 99/5 in 14.5 overs. Kieron Pollard’s quick-fire 27 (off 10 balls) did not help Mumbai Indians’ cause as Chennai Super Kings were crowned worthy champions. Ambati Rayudu made a valiant 15-ball 21 but two wickets in quick succession spelt Mumbai Indians doom.
Off –spinnner Muralitharan was simply brilliant today as he had figures of 1/17 and he was well supported by Shadab Jakati and R Ashwin. Earlier, Murali Vijay and Matthew Hayden put on 44 runs in 7.2 overs for the opening wicket before the former was back in the pavilion for a 19-ball 26. Vijay, one of the success stories of IPL-3, struck two lovely sixes but fell to a skier. He was held nicely by Tiwary at deep mid-wicket off Dilhara Fernando. The struggling Hayden lasted for 31 balls for his 17. His miserable stay ended when he top-edged Pollard and the resultant high-catch was taken by wicketkeeper Ambati Rayudu. Fernando, who bowled in the right areas, captured his second wicket as Badrinath (14) hooked and was caught at deep fine leg. Mumbai Indians lost the focus in the middle overs as Suresh Raina was dropped twice, on 13 and 28. Fernando could not judge the catch at third man off Zaheer Khan on the first occasion and then Zaheer Khan made a mess of a skier at mid-on. Pollard (4-0-45-0) was the bowler and the West Indian went on to concede as many as 20 runs in his last over.
Raina (57) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni shared 72 runs in 35 balls. Mumbai Indians broke the pair when Zaheer Khan dismissed Dhoni, whose leading edge went to extra cover. But the free-stroking Raina ensured that Chennai Super Kings got a competitive total of 168/5. Lankan bowlers Malinga and Fernando bowled splendidly. Zaheer and Harbhjan, too, bowled tight spells.
