The purists of the game of cricket must be the most perplexed lot. They would not know how to react, till the time test cricket only represented the game of cricket, its frontiers were not expanding. But as the age of instant nirvana in the form of Twenty-20 cricket is expanding, the countries, which used to cock a nook at cricket, seem to be warming up to it. It is probably more to do with the fact that Twenty-20 cricket has become one of the biggest commercial success stories in the recent times, and as a result new converts are getting added to the list.

The tag of being associated with a rebel league that is the Indian Cricket League has been become such a mill around the neck of the Pakistani cricketers that there cricketing career in the national mainstream has virtually reached a dead end. It is inspite of the fact that there is quite a lot of cricket left in them. Therefore it could be welcome news that these seven players including the former captain of Pakistan Inzamam-ul-Haq who played in the Indian Cricket League, ICL feature in the American Cricket league.

World Cup 2011 may be two long years away, but the preparations and qualifiers have already begun. While the rest of the world is occupied with the ongoing Indian Premier League matches in South Africa, 12 teams (namely Ireland, Kenya, Canada, Namibia, Netherlands, Oman, Bermuda, Afghanistan, Uganda, UAE, Denmark and Scotland) divided into 2 groups, are battling it out in its backyard for a place in the World Cup. Four top teams from among these will qualify and will join the 10 full-member countries in the cricket World Cup which will be hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The ICC has declined the application of the Indian Cricket League for official recognition. The ICL had filed this application last year, which was finally decided by the ICC at their board meeting in Dubai yesterday. The ICC was reported in the cricket news as saying that the status of the players who had joined the ‘rebel’ league would be decided by the individual member cricket boards.

Following the terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore last month - attacks that put the whole cricket world in turmoil - the International Cricket Council (ICC) dropped Pakistan as the co-hosts of the 2011 Cricket World Cup. This final decision was taken at the ICC Executive Board meetings that took place on Friday. The International Cricket Council Board said that ‘‘uncertain security situation’’ in Pakistan was what prompted this decision. Pakistan was slated to host 14 of the matches, along with India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
