The English cricket team has recently been thru some tumultuous times: in the recent past, the English captain and coach have fought and been fired; the English team has lost a series in the West Indies that it was expected to win and how the ECB is scrounging around for a captain for the T20 squad. Perhaps it is in order to alleviate some of their many woes that former English skipper 34 year old Michael Vaughan has been recalled to the squad and awarded a one year contract.

The cricket ‘bible’, the Wisden Cricketer’s Almanac has named Indian cricket player Virender Sehwag the ‘Leading cricketer of the year’. In addition Wisden also came out with a ‘Dream test XI’ team which named Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its captain and as many as 5 Indian players in its ranks. Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan are the other Indians in the dream team.

With Wisden Cricketers’ Almanac honoring Claire Taylor, as one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year, the leading run-scorer in England’s recent victory in the Women's World Cup joins the exclusive club of such cricket maestros as Don Bradman (1931), Graham Gooch (1980) and Shane Warne (1994). The historical announcement at the conservative Lord’s ground was made almost ten years to the day after MCC first admitted women members.

As the battle continues between Proteas and the Aussies, the ICC ranking has become the most volatile. Over past 13 months it has changed a number of times. The upcoming cricket ODI series between the two countries may bring another sets of change and with that, changes will have to be made in the seedings and groups for the much awaited Champions Trophy.

Tides of fortunes indeed have an interesting cycle, when you are pushed into the corner; suddenly you would find that the fortune has started smiling on your face. Mohammed Asif is one such player, who might have lost the hope that he would ever be able to hold the cherry in his hand and test the mettle of the player at the other end, but somebody up there has been benevolent and indeed seems to have faith in his innocence.
