A proposal has been made to build the world’s largest and sophisticated cricket stadium in Chennai to host the world cup in 2011.
Chennai is all set to find its name in the world’s superlatives for it is getting the world’s largest cricket stadium which would surpass the Eden gardens and the Melbourne cricket ground in terms of size and seating capacity. Till now only these two cricket grounds can accommodate near 1 lakh viewers but the proposed Chennai cricket stadium would go beyond this figure of one lakh.
The stadium will be built on a 50 acre area in Karunkuzhipallam village in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu which is about 25 kilometers away from Chennai.
The project is based on the view to host the next world cup in 2011 where India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will co-host the event jointly. The Tamil Nadu cricket association has come into action to build an enlarged stadium to meet the event.
It is proposed to equip this stadium with a retractable roof so that the matches will not be washed out with the rains and the stadium will have all the sophisticated safety measures to meet the world’s standards.
For the building of the stadium the government has given the 50 acre land on lease for 30 years on the initial payment of rupees one lakh. From the whole area, 30 acre land will be used in building the stadium complex whereas the remaining 20 acre will be used in making two smaller fields for training, research and rehabilitation.
Though the proposals have been made, but the project has not been given out to any contractor nor the name of the stadium has been finalized till yet. The association and the state government will finalize the name later after consultation with each other. A big chunk of money has been reserved for the completion of the project.
In India it would be a proud moment to get the world’s largest, sophisticated stadium which would be at par with world’s standards.
It is really a big move on the Indian part to get such cricket stadium which would meet the world’s standards where the cricket fans would enjoy the matches while sitting in the largest crowd in the world’s largest stadium.
