Here is breaking news; BCCI offers their selectors a salary really fat--- Rs 2.5 million per annum! Isn’t it slightly at the higher end? Do they really deserve the sum? Let’s find answer with this Cricket360 article.

India is possibly the only place in the world, where you can make big bucks for doing absolutely nothing. Why, our politicians do that! And now it is the turn of the BCCI selectors to do exactly that---we mean adding up to their bank balance without getting a single crease on their shirts! If you are one of five selectors of the national selection committee, the Board of cricket in India is now ready to pay you the compensation of Rs 25 lakh per annum. Last Sunday, BCCI at its working committee meeting in Mumbai has taken the decision that our cricket selectors definitely deserve a pay packet as huge as this for the hard work they put in all the year long!
Since Mohindar Amarnath called them a bunch of Jokers twenty years ago, the sensible cricket watchers of India found it the most appropriate title for them! The BCCI selectors seem to appreciate the title too! They seem to work really hard so that they can do justice to this rare honor! Just look at India’s latest debacle at Srilanka and you will understand how reasonable and hardworking are these men who pick up the players to represent India in international cricket! It’s a pity that their scheme of things bomb at cricket score board every now and then! And now 2.5 millions a year for these lot!

Now BCCI has its own point; it wants to increase the accountability of the body of selectors. They seriously think, putting the selectors on its payroll will pay back. However, the BCCI makes it clear that at the time of appointment, the selectors can not be the office bearers of BCCI or its affiliated units. BCCI also stipulated the criteria for the rank of selector---only the players who have played more than twenty five first class matches and retired from international as well as domestic cricket ten years ago can grace the chairs of national selectors.
The essence of team selection lies in spotting the right talent. The selectors must have an eye for real gift and a knack for drawing up a balanced team. They must rise above petty politics in picking up the representatives for the cricket at the international level. While no salary is adequate for the men at work for building up a really strong Team India, 2.5 millions is an impossible sum for a body who earn misery and disgrace for the nation time and again. Yes this sum is sheer wastage for the bunch of jokers.
