One more year of the most prestigious awards of the Cricketing World. Some call it Cricket Oscars too.
| ICC Award Categories and Recipients | | ICC Cricketer of the Year Award | Shivnarine Chanderpaul (WI) | | ICC Test Player of the Year Award | Dale Steyn (RSA) | | ICC ODI Player of the Year Award | Mahendra Singh Dhoni (IND) | | ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year Award | Charlotte Edwards (ENG) | | ICC Emerging Player of the Year Award | Ajantha Mendis (SL) | | ICC Associate ODI Player of the Year Award | Ryan ten Doeschate (NZL) | | ICC Twenty20 International Performance of the Year Award | Yuvraj Singh (IND) | | ICC Spirit of Cricket Award | Sri Lanka | | ICC Umpire of the Year Award | Simon Taufel | | The ICC World Test Team of the Year 2008 (in batting order): | Graeme Smith (RSA, Captain) Virender Sehwag (IND) Mahela Jayawardena (SL) Shivnarine Chanderpaul (WI) Kevin Pietersen (ENG) Jacques Kallis (RSA) Kumar Sangakkara (SL, Wicketkeeper) Brett Lee (AUS) Ryan Sidebottom (ENG) Dale Steyn (RSA) Muttiah Muralidaran (SL) 12th Man: Stuart Clark (AUS) | | The ICC World ODI Team of the Year 2008 (in batting order): | Herschelle Gibbs (RSA) Sachin Tendulkar (IND) Ricky Ponting (AUS, Captain) Yunus Khan (PAK) Andrew Symonds (AUS) Mahendra Singh Dhoni (IND, Wicketkeeper) Farveez Maharoof (SL) Daniel Vettori (NZL) Brett Lee (AUS) Mitchell Johnson (AUS) Nathan Bracken (AUS) 12th Man: Salman Butt (PAK) | Whatever the results were, the two Indian Media Kids – Dhoni and Yuvraj, got into the limelight again. But nobody notices that Media is more happy and lucky than both of them as the TRPs & revenues top the charts for the Media Barons, bringing a smile on their faces. Anyways it’s not the time to get so critical of them as its time to celebrate the most awaited awards of the year. Let us go through some interesting figures out of the awardees: Fig.1. Total Number of Awards (segregated on the basis of Nationality):
| Australia | 7 | | Sri Lanka | 6 | | India | 5 | | South Africa | 5 | | England | 3 | | West Indies | 2 | | New Zealand | 2 | | Pakistan | 2 | Fig.2. Number of Major Awards, excludes the ICC Test & ODI Teams (segregated on the basis of Nationality): | India | 2 | | Sri Lanka | 2 | | West Indies | 1 | | South Africa | 1 | | Australia | 1 | | England | 1 | | New Zealand | 1 | Rankings of the Teams on the basis of the above figures: | Rankings | Based on Fig. 1 | Based on Fig. 2 | | 1 | Australia | India | | 2 | Sri Lanka | Sri Lanka | | 3 | India | West Indies | | 4 | South Africa | South Africa | | 5 | England | Australia | | 6 | West Indies | England | | 7 | New Zealand | New Zealand | | 8 | Pakistan | N/A | This comparison gives some food to our brains and tells us the nature and character of each team. Interestingly, Australia gains the top seat in total number of awards but that is due to the inclusion of maximum players from Australia in ICC Test & ODI Team. Now when it comes to individual awards, the figure here is zero as the only award which Australia receives in this for best Umpiring. So it shows the great team playing together and performing above all; not mere individual performances can take one to the top – forms the bottom line.
We have already talked about Team India and there is nothing interesting except the Media Kids. Tendulkar has a place in the ICC ODI Team and Sehwag in the Test Team. The point to note here is about Sri Lanka who has seen a major turn around with the MM factor; specifically Mendis.
Pakistan’s turmoil is the resultant of the political instability and the indiscipline of its players. Loss of Woolmer and Inzamam is still costing them heavily. The English & New Zealanders have youth & women’s cricket highlighting their cricketing conditions. It’s high time that these two teams have been consistent; also the factors which have affected them badly are the IPL and ICL from the Indian origin.
Lastly South Africans & West Indians, they have the result just opposite to the Aussies. Great individual performances but as team Africans face inconsistency where as Indies face the challenge to revamp their cricket to bring back the glory.
We should hope the best for the cricketing year ahead and wish good luck to the teams to keep their fans on their toes and hearts beating faster than ever for each and every one’s true love – CRICKET!!!
