Graeme Hick is an English cricketer born 23 May 1966 at Salisbury, Rhodesia, who played 65 Test matches and 120 ODIs with an average career average of 31.32 and 37.33 respectively. He scored Test hundreds and 5 ODI hundreds. He failed to replicate his imminent County cricket statistics in international matches.
Graeme Hick played county cricket for almost 24 years for Worcestershire, the only team he had played for in county. Hick made his debut in county championship in 1984 for Worcestershire against Surrey. His last county match was against Essex played during 20-23 August 2008. His performances in county cricket were fabulous. He scored 1000 runs or more in a season for 19 times and more than 1000 catches are there to his credits. He is the eighth player to score a total of 136 first class hundreds at an average 52.22. He had scored more than 64,000 runs in all forms of cricket together. He was a remarkable off spinner and made respectable performances with 23 test wickets and 30 ODI wickets. He was a master of county cricket and he retired from first class cricket and was said to have signed up to train Malvern College. Career Statistics
Graeme Hick could not replicate in his test career the massive form he had in his county side. His debut in test cricket was delayed as he had to wait for 7 years to be eligible to play for England Team. He refused New Zealand’s offer to play for them which would have enabled him an early entry into international cricket. He made his debut in test cricket against West Indies on 6 June 1991 where he was burdened by expectations from the fans which he could not live up to. He failed miserably and from there onwards his test career was mixed up with ups and downs. He could not perform consistently in test cricket, but was somewhat a success in ODIs. His first ODI was also against West Indies on 23 May 1991. Though he could make only 14 runs in that game he could later find the rhythm. During the Ashes Tour in 1994 Mike Atherton declared England Team’s innings when Hick was playing not out at 98. The reason was slow scoring. The decision surprised all including Hick who was not happy. In 1996 Hick troubled a lot to find form and eventually he was dropped from the England Team. Further it took one and half year for him to regain the cap of England cricket team. He played a total of 65 tests and 120 ODIs and 37 Twenty20 matches. His last test match was against Sri Lanka at Kandy during March 7-11 and the last ODI was also against the same opponents on 27 March 2001. Though he opined he could have offered much more than other England players he was not selected further. Career Statistics
Graeme Hick’s cricket career was a bit of failure and success. He was inconsistent in International cricket matches even though he could do well in county matches.
