Cricket matches start with a pitch report. A lot of importance is given to pitch and the pitch curator’s report is monitored closely by the coach and captain of both the sides playing cricket. A decision based on the pitch report results in either win or loss in international cricket, where pitches play a major role.

The cricket score depends heavily on the pitch. In Asian pitches, the score will be limited due to the nature of the track. In fact, in Asian countries pitches decide a match. This is not a good sign for international cricket. Pitches must be a means of fair play and it should not wear off until both the innings is over. Both the teams must have the same conditions for bowling and batting.

Consider the recent cricket series of India in Srilanka. Pitches decided the entire Test and one day cricket matches. In one day matches, captains who had won the toss and elected to bat first in the pitch always won. Audience were not eager in watching the matches as the result is known after the toss due to the pitch conditions. The captain after winning the toss puts up a big smile and the Indian captain M S Dhoni won four tosses on a row.

In the entire one day series, the pitch favoured the team batting first. The Bowlers struggled and especially the spinners, who form the major part in the Asian continent, did not get any assistance from the pitch in the first innings while in the second innings, the spinners were getting a lot of turn. In the first innings of the Srilankan series, batsmen had the advantage with bowlers getting nothing from the pitch and in the second innings, batsmen struggled as the pitch favoured the bowlers.

India won the 5 match series 3-2. Pitch was the main deciding factor in the entire series. These types of results will question the performance of the players. If results become one sided based on the toss and the pitch, the spirit and suspense of the cricket game will be lost all together. The cricket boards must take the pitches as a serious issue and appoint international cricket pitch curators to solve this and make cricket matches nail biting ones. Pitches ruin the spirit of the cricket game and the player’s performance has a little contribution in the result of the cricket game.
