The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has gone under its regulatory renovation by electing its new Board Members under Shashank Manohar as President and also declared its new Selection Committee under Krishnamachari Srikkanth as Chairman of Selection Committee. The change should incorporate and efficiently execute new policies leading towards development of Cricket in the country more than their treasuries.
After lots of hustle and bustle, at last world's richest cricket body, BCCI has declared all the new members for 2008-10 office term in its Annual General Meeting on September 27-28, 2008 held at Cricket Centre, Mumbai. After all kinds of hectic parleys and lobbying, instead of being an election the matter is more of a selection that to biased by personal choices and influences. The most breaking news is that for the first time all the five selectors will be paid an annual salary. According to the latest cricket coverage and cricket news, the recent declarations made by BCCI are that they will pay an annual honorarium of Rs.25 lakhs to the selection committee members. This cricket news is undoubtedly a positive step towards the maintenance of a healthier structure in Indian Cricket. The former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth has already been declared as the chairman of the BCCI selection committee. He will be replacing Dilip Vengsarkar. With a career of 43 Tests and 146 one-dayers, Srikkanth was the highest scorer in the victorious 1983 World Cup Final at Lords. After his retirement in 1992, he remained as an integral part of the game by being involved in Commentary, Cricket Analysis, Support to Cricket Coaching in Chennai, involvement in IPL by being with Chennai Super Kings as Brand Ambassador and buzzing internet cricket market with his portal. With him the other members of BCCI Selection Committee are - the World Cup Winning Dignitary - Yashpal Sharma (North), Former Leg-Spinner - Narender Hirwani (Central), Bengal Batsman - Raja Venkat (East) and Prolific Scorer for Maharshtra – Surinder Bhave (West). However there are lots of twists and turns coming up there way. All these selections are done on the basis of the selection criteria that have been decided in August 2008. According to the criteria for the Indian Cricket Board's Working Committee - ‘the members must have played for India or should have played more than 25 first-class games and should have retired at least 10 years ago.’ Added to this as opposed to last session ‘the selector can not be an office bearer of the board or any of its affiliated units’. As per these compulsions, people who have got to do nothing with cricket are all kept aside. However in case of Hirwani, who had played first-class cricket till as recently as two years ago is getting into the controversy already. There is no clarification made regarding his Test career as the cut-off point. In addition to the selection committee, the current BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah will of course resign from his position. Though nothing has been made clear as yet, but he more likely will remain in the committee with some major responsibilities. Subsequently, the corrupt reign of President Sharad Pawar is going to end and the replacement will be done by Shashank Manohar. Along with Shashank Manohar; N. Srinivasan, Sanjay Jagdale and Mohinder Pandove have officially taken over as the principal office-bearers of the BCCI at the 79th Annual General Body Meeting. Mr. Manohar is already the proud elected president for 2008-11 at the 78th AGM held last September. N. Srinivasan will be the Hon. Secretary and Sanjay Jagdale and Mohinder Pandove will be the Joint Secretary and Hon. Treasurer respectively for a three-year term. The committee will have Arun Jaitley (North), Lalit Modi (Central), Shivlal Yadav (South), Chirayu Amin (West), and Arindham Ganguly (East) as unopposed elected Vice Presidents. As for the National Selection Committee, the decision has been taken that the selectors in the senior, junior and for women will not be office-bearers of the BCCI or any of its affiliated units. Fro these positions cricketers should have played for India or more than 25 first class matches. Added to this they must have been a retired cricketer for ten years, for the senior selection committee. As for the retirement period it has been set as five years for the junior selection committee and for the women’s selection committee. As for the honorarium, the senior selectors will get Rs.25 lakh per annum. Rs.15 lakh and Rs.5 lakh have been decided for junior selectors and women selectors respectively. Not only this, there are lots to come in the way by the end of these declarations.
