In the 1st ODI of Bangladesh vs. New Zealand on Thu, Oct 09 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur; Bangladesh had a tremendous victory over New Zealand. Bangladesh had a score of 203 for three in 45.3 overs. With this they beat New Zealand by 201 for nine in 50.0 overs and that too by 7 wickets.
Doubts and controversies are coming in their way, regarding the winning over strategy of Bangladesh. The credits are though acknowledged yet the controversies are in the air. The doubt is all about whether they won it all out of a fluke or it was just destined to them. As a matter of fact this was an outrageous defeat for New Zealand and shattered their scope to regain a second spot in the One-day rankings. As compared to their previous lowest total against Bangladesh was a score of 224 at Chittagong in 2004. Or on the contrary, the kiwis were taking the team more lightly and thus were crowned as the loser. This may be the cause of this easy win of Bangladesh. There is no doubt that it was a jump start and Bangladesh could manage to stroll to a profoundly historic win. Junaid who had eventually failed to get off to good starts in the New Zealand tour earlier this year, made his transformation well noticed; and it was Siddique who made a record with his highest ODI score. Along with Junaid Siddique, Mohammad Ashraful and Jacob Oram came up with their contributions of 84, 60 and 57 respectively. Added to all these team members it was the Captain Mohammad Ashraful who finished unbeaten on 60, Abdur Razzak’s 3-32 and Mortaza’s 4-44, made Bangladesh win over New Zealand. Siddique hit prolific eight boundaries in 139-ball and Ashraful hit five boundaries and a six in his rapid 56-ball innings. Though New Zealand had a dynamic beginning with 47 [Jesse Ryder (34) and Brendon McCullum (14)], yet McCullum was discharged from the pitch by Mortaza in the ninth over. Consequently five more wickets were sent back to the pavilion in a space of just 32 runs. Razzak dismissed Scott Styris (four) and Daniel Flynn (six) before the Oram-Vettori could get hold over the match. This is indeed a matter of great pride for the whole nation as it secured a first ever one-day international victory over New Zealand. As scrutinization over the game follows, we could see that the contribution made by the team really deserves appreciation. One must consider that Bangladesh’s batting line-up proved to be more determined as compared to their performance of last year in Queenstown; where they could hardly manage to have 98. The Bangladeshi Team really made a difference in their cricket history in an emphatic manner and now it is all about getting stick to the fame.
