Australia and New Zealand: Fresh Challenges Ahead Print E-mail

The Aussies can cheer about much of the cricket news of the Trans Tasman Series : Ricky Ponting showed his spark in the second test match, Brett Lee with his haul of 9 wickets in the second test match was nothing short of spectacular and Brad Haddin was really impressive with the bat. New Zealand on the other hand may not take much consolation from their performance as managed only 156, 177, 270 and 203 from their four innings in the series. None of their batsmen reached triple figures in any of those innings. While the Aussies will be confident going into their series against South Africa, the Kiwis will be less so going into their series against the West Indies.

The New Zealand Team failed to put up much resistance to the Aussie onslaught on the fourth day of the second test of the Trans Tasman Cup and the visitors collapsed to an innings and 62run defeat, making it a clean sweep for the Australians in this series. Brett Lee did the major damage, taking 5 wickets in the innings (9 in the match). The one man who showed some backbone and stood up to the Australian onslaught was Brendon McCullum with his 84 not out. Michael Clarke was declared man of the series and Brad Haddin was man of the match.

There were two major contributors with the bat for Australia today, on day three of the second test match: Michael Clarke made 110 and Brad Haddin made 169. In his eventful innings, Haddin stroked 24 boundaries and two sixes as well. His fluent innings would certainly send the message that here is someone who yet may fill the shoes of Gilchrist. The Aussies made 535, giving them the considerable 270 run lead over New Zealand’s first innings score. At the end of the day’s play, New Zealand was 35 for no loss.

Carrying on from the first day of the second test match the Kiwis managed to add a measly 8 runs to their overnight score while rapidly losing their remaining 4 wickets on day two. Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey managed to add some luster to the day’s cricket news with their scores of 79 and 69 respectively and at the end of the day’s play the hosts were 241 for the loss of three wickets; just 30 runs short of the first innings total of the New Zealand Team.

The Kiwis won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that appears to have been a good one, as the visitors made a solid start due in large part to the efforts of opener Aaron Redmond who has been the highest scorer so far with his score of 83. At stumps on the first day of the second test at the oval , the visitors were 262 for the loss of 6 wickets. The live scoreboard looked like this at the end of the day: Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori were at the crease with the personal scores of 30 and 12 respectively.
