Delhi witnessed the inaugural Twenty20 Champions Awards on October 23rd night. The do was flanked by the who’s who of the Cricket World including ICC President Sharad Pawar, Champions League Twenty20 Chairman Lalit Modi, Principal Advisor to ICC and PCA President IS Bindra, ESPN-STAR Sports MD Manu Sawhney and Australian and Indian Cricketers.

The Awards were given to best performers of various domestic leagues of countries participating in Champions League  T20 which was announced to take place from December 3rd to December 10th. Maverick music director AR Rahman will compose the Official Anthem for the Champions Twenty20 League. Lalit Modi remarked, “It was necessary to honour and encourage performances in Twenty20 Leagues around the world as this is a format of the future from where Champions of Champions will emerge.”

            ð  Champions League Twenty20Kolkata Knight Rider and New Zealand wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum received the Highest Individual Score Award for his 158 runs in the opening IPL match against Bangalore Royal Challengers.

 ð  Australian Batsman and Kings XI Punjab opener Shaun Marsh who scored 616 runs averaging 68.44 was honoured with the Award for Best Batting Average. He also got the Orange Cup for scoring the highest runs in the IPL tournament.

 ð  Essex Eagles Batsman Graham Napier clinched the Best Batting Strike Rate Award for an astounding strike rate of 195.2. His record knock of 152 against Sussex in Twenty20 Cup included 16 sixes which is a world record.

 ð  The Best Bowling Figures Award went to Rajasthan Royals and Pakistani Pacer Sohail Tanvir for his splendid 6/14 against Chennai Super Kings. Tanvir also grabbed the Purple Cap in IPL for taking highest wickets (22) in IPL.

 ð  Dolphins and South African Bowler Yusuf Abdullah got the Award For Best Bowling Economy of 4.32 runs in 31 overs.

 ð  Cobras bowler Charl Langeveldt won the Best Bowling Strike Rate Award for a strike rate of 9 with 18 wickets.

 ð  Sialkot Stallions captain Shoaib Malik led his team in 16 consecutive victory and was awarded with a Special Achievement Award.

 ð  The only Indian amongst the awardees was Kolkata Knight Riders and Bengal all-rounder Lakshmi Ratan Shukla who got the Award for Best Bowling Strike Rate in an Innings with a strike rate of 1.6 plus 3 wickets.

Manu Sawhney, Managing Director, ESPN-STAR Sports remarked on the upcoming Champions League, “Champions League Twenty20 is a platform where the best of the world come and play. It is premium, inspirational, truly world class and the highest honor the game has to offer.” The Inaugural Season will make the Winning Team richer by US$6 Million.
