Sourav Ganguly to appear in 'new avatar"-to join Commentary Team with Harsha Print E-mail

Sourav Ganguly is all set to join Harsha Bhogle, the world famous and widely acknowledged and respected commentator.

Soon, the entire cricketing fraternity is going to witness Sourav Ganguly , as a part of the commentary team alongside the likes of Harsha Bhogle, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shashtri and more.

When Harsha Bhogle heard about Ganguly’s interest to join their team as a commentator, he was very excited. Harsha Bhogle mentioned: “I have no idea that he is making his debut. But I have known him very well over the years and if he takes commentary as seriously as he does his cricket, I have no doubt he will be excellent.”

Pointed as “flawed”, the entire qualification rule to become a cricketing commentator, Harsha Bhogle, regrets the fact that only a finger count of better commentators eventually make it large on the commentator’s box.

Harsha believes that reality show judges live in an unreal world. On being asked whether there is a need to create drama in the commentary box to hook more TRPs much akin to what happens between judges in a reality show, Harsha had a terse reply. “I am glad you mentioned that because reality show judges live in an unreal world. I am waiting for the day when viewers see through the drama. Luckily we live in the real world and at least so far, it is a world that demands far greater integrity.”

Talking about his experience as a travel host on a series on BBC, Harsha says, “No career shift here. But at the same time, it was very different from my experience in live television which gives you confidence but doesn’t prepare you for patience. It was a humbling programme and needed close co-ordination with director, cameraman and sound recordist and it was a treat to watch other skilled artists perform. I saw parts of India I wouldn’t have otherwise seen, met the kind of people that I otherwise may not have – a Buddhist monk, a conservationist in the Sunderbans, rural people living happily even as urban rich seem hassled.”

He adds, “I have always had an identity outside of cricket. I believe to enjoy cricket more, I must have as many experiences as possible. Also, if you want to be highly regarded in a medium, you must show your versatility and so a travel show. Don’t really know what the future holds but if there is something interesting why not?”

Harsha Bhogle also points out: “Luckily, I started early but I pity talented young men, who are better than those who get opportunities. But despite of their talent they are left behind because of a flawed qualification rule. Luckily when a cricket website did its global poll, they found I was doing okay in the eyes of viewers.”

This is very interesting. Tough time ahead within the commentary team, then?
