Australian captain Ricky Ponting was handed the ICC ODI Championship shield on Sunday at the Ferozeshah Kotla. However, the short function was marred by the caustic comments of IS Bindra, principal advisor to the ICC and former BCCI president, who was miffed at the event getting delayed by 45 minutes due to the late arrival of Australian captain Ricky Ponting. Taking a dig at the Aussies, Bindra began his speech by saying sorry to award sponsors. “I apologise to the sponsors for inconvenience. First, the venue of the award ceremony was changed at the last moment and then we’ve been kept waiting for so long. Our sponsors spend a lot of money to support the ICC and we’ve to be responsible towards them.” Bindra added, “It’ll not happen again in the future.” Ponting, sitting on the dais, did not react to Bindra’s comments during his acceptance speech. Dwelling on his team’s feat of winning the ODI championship, Ponting said they had stumbled a little bit last year as South Africa dislodged them from the top spot but worked hard to regain the numero uno position. “We’ve managed to maintain a high standard and we hope to continue that,” he said. Ponting reiterated that his team wanted to be the best in both Tests and One-dayers. He accepted that great challenges were coming his team’s way. “The target is to maintain the standard we’ve set.”
