Breaking News: Amidst a lot of hue and cry over his fitness and form, Anil Kumble finally hung up his boots, and announced his retirement minutes after the tea break surprising the cricketing
fraternity. This is the last time, one would be seeing Jumbo in action, as India declared with a lead of 244 with Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman remaining not out at 32 and 59 respectively. Kumble waved them in with his bandaged left hand. In theory, there are 23 overs left. Now, MS Dhoni will reportedly take over as Test captain.
Kumble has been a champ, a true fighter, everything is destined. , Fittingly so, he was supposed to play his last test at his favourite venue where he took 10 wickets in innings . Fantastic fighter. We all still remember the incident in which he came out with a strapped jaw and took Brian Lara's wicket...one of the bravest incidents on a cricket field. Kumble won't be playing at Nagpur. This will be his last game.
Mohinder Amarnath stated “he must have thought about it for some time. He must have thought the time has come to quit. It's now time to relax. He has done a lot for Indian cricket” while Ian Chappell quoted" He has got his timing just about right. He also has the satisfaction that another legspinner [Mishra] coming through. I would never forget how he took the last catch in the first innings and how he flung the ball at the stumps. Always defiant and always fighting till the end."
And Kumble led the team on to the field for the last time with cameras flashing, as he dons his Indian cap back on for one last time on a cricket field, has a chat with Bowden and walks on to the middle. And he starts bowling the first over in the post tea session for India against Australia in the last day of the 3rd Test Match at Feroz Shah Kotla, in Delhi.
