Selection of M Vijay: Regionalism vs. Rationalism Print E-mail
Pitched By Kartikeya Bhatt
Thursday, 06 November 2008

Rating 2.5/5 (2 votes)

As we all know Indian cricket is not only about the players, Coaches but also about the Selectors who are responsible for some player’s success or failure and again the selection Committee is in the Spot Light.

Murali_Vijay.gifIn the present ongoing series between India and Australia some new faces have been introduced for the final and decider test in Nagpur. The selection of some players has risen quite uproar not only in the selection committee but also among players. Gautam Gambhir who was in an impeccable form was banned for the final test match after being find guilty for elbowing Shane Watson. To find a replacement for such an immaculate player would have been hard but there is no scarcity of talent right now in Indian cricket.

So the selection committee on the pretext of bringing young blood decided to opt for (star) Tamil Nadu player Murali Vijay (as being said by Krish Shrikant). As per the rumor’s going around except Krish Shrikant no other selector was in agreement with this decision.

The most important point is on what basis M Vijay was selected no doubt he has a good Avg. in first class record but what about others who are more talented than him for instance there is Cheteshwar Pujara who is much more younger than M Vijay if young blood is one of the reasons of M Vijay’s selection in the team. Pujara can bat   with an Avg. of 47.32 in first class cricket (equivalent to M Vijay) but he can bowl too he has got 76 wickets in first class cricket. There are innumerable players who are much younger and have a much better record than M Vijay So what about them. Moreover M Vijay has no whatsoever experience in international cricket and bringing him in such a crucial match where every player counts can cause problems.

The reason for his selection can also be possible because he is from Tamil Nadu same as our don Selector Krish Shrikant. This Phenomena has been witnessed whenever a team is selected for a future series for instance our X selector Mr. Dilip Vengsarkar a Maharashtrian always preferred Mumbai players like Wasim Jaffer who was given innumerable chances during Vengsarkar’s tenure as chief selector. This partiality towards ones regional players has been witnessed many times.

There are many Players who are Knocking on the door for the Indian team but the gate masters are our selectors and hence they should be impartial and rational while selection of the team. It is this selection that makes or breaks a sportsperson.

Not allowing a deserving candidate to play is not only ruining a carrier of a player but also a crime against the sports itself.

Let’s hope for the best for this Sport and its players whose dream is to represent his country in the international arena.

Kiran  - surprising selection   |2010-05-09 22:23:05
but Krish was always critisizing the selectors when he was on the other side of
the table. i dont think he would be doing such regionalism. but i feel uthappa
would have been a better choice as he is experienced, agressive and can bat at
any place and any situation. he has the abiltiy bring back the lost victory.
vijay has less international experience and not a time tested choice. I feel his
poor performence in the current T20 work cup is a proof of the fact. i really
dont understand why he was selected ?
slk  - If Obama's election is Racism then this is region   |2008-11-09 03:23:47
Continued...

The time Karnataka and TN played the Ranji finals 9 of the
Karnataka players played for India and not a single one from TN. Shockingly six
bowlers from karnataka played for India, Srinath, Kumble, Prasad, Joshi, Dodda
Ganesh & Johnson or someone else. This means even the second string bowler from
karnataka played for India. It is no coincidence that the chief selector,
Brijesh Patel was from Karnataka.

This is regionalism not selecting a guy with
a good record, good technique, good fielding, strong mind and mainly who is in
prime form. It is not like all the players from TN were selected. FYI Badrinath
had the best record in India for more than a couple of years. There were many
other before him.

So please think twice before writing. Not all people are
tamil haters to accept any scrap regarding them.

Le Bhatta,

Where were you when TN players had the best averages in the country
and all kind of junior guys with much lesser averages and worst techniques were
selected.

To quote you

"Not allowing a deserving candidate to play is not
only ruining a carrier of a player but also a crime against the sports
itself"

Finally one deserving player from TN gets a early chance to play
for India and you call it regionalism.

Its like the whites calling Obama's
election racism. On the contrary a black man never led the country before b'cos
of racism. If a TN player never made it to the Indian team it was due to
regionalism. Regionalism is not like what a perverted discriminative guy like
you thinks about Vijays selection.

I remember a time when TN and Karnataka
played the Ranji Finals and not a single player from TN played for India but
almost all the karnataka players played for India when Brijesh patel was the
chief se...
Arvind Narayanan  - Dada Recommended Vijay   |2008-11-08 22:56:38
Hail Dada for recommending a worthy 3rd opener for India, wil prove to be a able
ally for Shewag and Gambir.
Srini Potluri  - Bhatt wants an opener from Karnataka   |2008-11-07 00:25:19
The pin headed Bhatt is from Karnataka and he is disappointed that Gambhir's
replacement is not from Karnataka. His state kept on pushing mediocre Uttapams
into the Indian team. Thank god it didn't happen this time.
Muzzafar khan  - What i think a nice one   |2008-11-07 16:50:51
i think we should look the way bhatt is talking about. Every story has two
prespectievs though even i like M vijay but is still like the point of view
being put fprward here
Arvind Narayanan  - Absolutely Stupid to call it regionalism   |2008-11-06 23:34:28
Just Can`t understand this just b`coz the chief selector is from chennai doesn`t
mean we shouldn`t hav players from chennai playing in the team, such blogs
should be avoided for its totally irresponsible and causing a lot of bad blood,
anyways to clarify the selection, M.Vijay has been one among the top batsman in
the domestic circuit for the past 2 seasons, he has 2 double centuries and 3
hundreds and to correct u Mr.Bhat Vijay`s average is 52.96 and not 47.32 plus he
is fresh off a double hundred in conditions close to Nagpur and a partnership of
400 odd and Pujara averages 45.26(again ur wrong). Vijay was the 2nd highest
scorer in the challenger trophy and of course he must hav proved it to u he is
more than a capable batsman in the 1st Inns. Oh and i don`t know how u thought
Pujara can bowl coz he`s bowled 147 balls in first class and these instances
clearly shows ur totally incorrect and stupid, I hav a question why don`t u...
Chetan  - what crap   |2008-11-07 16:58:56
Arvind i think you have lost it if you think scoring 33 in test match cricket is
god then you must stop watching crickrt only
Arvind Narayanan  - Dude hope u know wat it is to build a partnership   |2008-11-08 18:54:45
Hey Mr.Chetan, the point is not the scoring of 33 but proving to be solid enough
to give shewag the confidence of scoring heavily. To build a good partnership,
both batsman neednt` score big time but if one can provide the support while the
other scores it serves as well, and dude hope u saw his ground fielding. If u
think i must stop watchin you should hav done the same years ago wen the time
was more for personal glory than team glory. If you build a partnership it will
aid in a team winning. By providing support to shewag in the partnership of 98
we managed to play out the crucial 1st hour and hope u saw wat happened after
the fall of the wicket. Providing support in a partnership is very important
plus Vijay didn`t get stuck and kept giving shewag the strike which is very
important while batting with shewag. I really think u should stop giving half
baked comments.
chetan  - why dont send a clown then   |2008-11-10 20:02:36
my friend arvind( who doset know c of cricket) if support is what you are
looking for then u can send any batsmen out there why dont tell shewag to play
both as a striker and as non striker also if u only want someone who can supprt
shewag. what was contribution of vijay in the test after all we won because of
some fabulos balling and not because of your gorgeous m vijay ok
A.Arvind.Narayanan  - If comes the need to send a clown we`d send u ther   |2008-11-11 09:59:41
By mentioning support i meant to push into you the need of not trying to copy
what shewag was trying to do but to bat with him and be an able ally to him.
This clearly shows u hav not watched the match coz if u had then u wouldn`t be
aqble to send out such stupid replies. Anyways if u hear the experts they`d tell
u India had good starts in both the innings which proved really crucial to the
end cause and Vijay`s fielding didn`t u c the runouts of both Hayden and Hussey,
i`m not sayin they were the main cause for the main there were plenty of other
good performances but just sayin this was one of them, and clearly proves Vijay
belongs here.
buzz  - M. Vijay   |2008-11-26 06:08:38
It was an encouraging debut by Vijay. Even Border praised his technique. He hits
the ball cleanly with minimum fuss, has a sound technique and a solid
defense.
Vijay could come in at number 3. He also fielded brilliantly -effecting two run
outs and taking a good catch. Looks like he is a better fielder than Gambir. He
was recommended by Ganguly and I don't there is anybody better than Saurav in
spotting talent. Nobady can accuse Saurav of nurturing regional biases. In fact,
he made a big dent on this malaise affecting Indian cricket. Yuvraj, Shewag,
Dhoni, were all Ganguly's proteges. At this stage we can say that Vijay's debut
was as impressive as Gambir's debut a few years ago. Look where Gautam is now!
Hiren Shah  - Stop calling it regionalism   |2008-11-06 22:32:28
Just because Srikkanth is from TN, no player should be selected from TN? What
kind of BS is this? As long as a player is selected from Mumbai, Delhi or
Karnataka you will keep your mouth shut. But if someone is selected from other
parts of the country, you start crying regionalism. Hell with you.
Chatopadhyay  - Comeon he can be right   |2008-11-07 16:54:44
Yor are just thinking in one direction there are diffrent views and i think we
should accept it man
Bhandari shah  - Down with thse selectors   |2008-11-06 17:40:51
Yes this regionalism thing is really destroying the sports. God knows when is
this going to end
