Cricket360 Review of the first ODI between India and England in Rajkot. India ran over the visitors as they recorded a landslide 158 runs victory and made the touring party suffer their third largest ODI defeat. Yuvraj Singh stole the limelight as he struck a lightning 138 off 78 deliveries even as a backache did its best to help England from stopping him. Zaheer Khan claimed 3 wickets as England crumbled to 229 chasing 387 for victory.

India feasted on the English turkey as they trounced upon the visitors by a mighty 158 runs. India was in-charge of the game from the word go and the Englishmen were completely out of luck today. A lost toss served as the launch pad as the Indian innings skyrocketed to an obscene total of 387 runs in 50 overs. In response, England could only muster 229 runs Zaheer led the pack and tore apart their batting line-up.

Kevin Pietersen’s decision to let India bat first went horribly wrong as Gautam Gambhir (51) and Virender Sehwag (85) looked in no mood for mercy. 387 to chase is intimidating by any standards and the foundation for it was laid by a 127-run opening wicket partnership. Yuvraj Singh stole the thunder as he went over-the-top with a blitzkrieg ton in just 68 balls. It never appeared the fiery southpaw had a splitting backache from the way he zoomed to 138 off 78 balls. He is now the fastest ODI centurion against England and this was India’s highest total against England, the previous one being 353 in 2005. 387 is also India’s highest total on Indian turf and second highest elsewhere.

Suresh Raina (43) partnered Yuvi in his runathon as they together added 89 runs from 78 deliveries for the third wicket. Yusuf Pathan appeared for a microsecond on the pitch and went back empty-handed after facing four deliveries. He forged another 50-run partnership with MS Dhoni (39) as he took India to the other side of 300. Runs never stopped pouring as Yuvi sent two of Flintoff’s deliveries in the 47th over for sixes and claimed another 18 runs of him in the final over.

England were totally clueless as they faced the Indian pace attack. Matt Prior (4) fell prey to Munaf and Owais Shah (0) became Zaheer’s victim in the next over. Zaheer strangled the top order as he clinched another two wickets in the 11th over. Skipper Pietersen (63) and Ravi Bopara (54*) tried to keep things ticking but to no avail. The English side crumbled with 12.3 overs of play still remaining. The local audience loved the game as a total of 22 sixes resembled the match to a T20 fix.
