New Zealand's Tim Southee has made a sensational start to his first cricket test in Australia with three wickets in his first four overs at the Gabba in Brisbane. Southee struck with the final deliveries of his second and third overs and then with the first ball of his fourth over bagged the prize scalp of Aussie captain Ricky Ponting to have the home side reeling at three for 23. Southee's first victim was Matthew Hayden with the big left hander caught at first slip by Ross Taylor for eight. The young Kiwi fast bowler then struck again with the last ball of his next over, getting the other opener Simon Katich to knick one through to Brendon McCullum with his score on 10. Ponting was caught by How in the gully for four from a delivery that caught the shoulder of the bat as he attempted to turn the ball to the leg side. Southee's figures at that stage were three for 12 off four overs. New Zealand were bowling after their captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and put Australia into bat. New Zealand included Southee at the expense of Kyle Mills while Peter Fulton was also omitted with Grant Elliott taking the allrounders spot following Jacob Oram's injury. It is just the third test appearances for Southee and Elliott. Storm damage after the covers blew apart delayed start by half an hour with play starting at 1.30pm (NZ time). Curator Kevin Mitchell Jnr says the Gabba "got smashed" by the storm which hit Brisbane overnight. "The covers actually blew apart just after one o'clock this morning," Mitchell told Sydney radio station 2KY this morning. "The test wicket is fine but we've got some water damage to the pitches adjacent to the wicket so we're just doing our best to dry that out so it's playable. Mitchell said it would be a difficult decision whether to bat or bowl for the captain who won the toss. "It's a hard one. "The humidity may play a part in how long the ball swings. Obviously the wicket's been juiced up again last night. "I wouldn't really know what to do. It's a bit of an each way bet I think." The pace-friendly conditions have seen Australia plump for allrounder Shane Watson ahead of off-spinner Jason Krejza in a four-man fast bowling attack. New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (captain), Jamie How, Aaron Redmond, Jesse Ry der, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum, Daniel Flynn, Grant Elliott, Tim Southee, Iain O'Brien, Chris Martin. Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich, Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark. Umpires: Rudi Koertzen (South Africa), Billy Doctrove (West Indies).
