Aus vs. NZ, 1st Test: Bowlers Continue to Dominate on the Day Two Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Reporter
Friday, 21 November 2008

Rating 2.3/5 (3 votes)

The Kiwis collapsed for the very modest score of 156 conceding a valuable lead of 58 runs to the hosts on day two of the first test being played at the Gabba. Mitchell Johnson brought the Aussies back into the game by taking four wickets, narrowly missing a hat trick but managing to take 3 wickets in the space of just 6 balls.  The second innings of the Australians began in an unspectacular fashion, with Matthew Hayden departing for a duck and only three batsmen so far have reached double figures.

We at Cricket360 certainly predict a result in this first test match of the Test Series down under between the Australians and the New Zealanders. If the cricket update yesterday showed that the Aussies were scuttled out for a mere 214, the Kiwis suffered an every worse fate, collapsing for the even more modest score of 156 conceding a valuable lead of 58 runs to the hosts. If the live scoreboard looked dismal for the Aussies yesterday, it looks to be even more so for the New Zealand team who may well be kicking themselves now for having won the toss and put the Aussies in to bat.

Whereas Tim Southee was the contributor with the ball for the New Zealand cricket team yesterday taking four wickets, today it was Mitchell Johnson who livened up the live cricket for the Aussies and brought them back into the game by taking four wickets, narrowly missing a hat trick but managing to take 3 wickets in the space of just 6 balls.

The visitors’ live scoreboard did not look quite so dismal to begin with, because at lunch they were just four wickets down with a 108 on the board. Most of the damage was inflicted by the Aussie team after lunch and the visitors were bundled out the less than encouraging total of 156.

Apart from wickets tumbling like nine pins there was further drama in the live cricket action on the field: Jesse Ryder seemed to be in good nick but suffered what appeared to be a very painful blow when one from Brett Lee struck him in the groin, and he went down in obvious agony.

The second innings of the Australians began in an unspectacular fashion, with Matthew Hayden departing for a duck and once again, looking at Cricket360’s live scoreboard one sees that only three batsmen so far reached double figures. Ricky Ponting seems more intent on making his mark off the field rather than on it these days, making unseemly remarks about past greats of Indian cricket rather than letting his bat do the talking; he made an unimpressive 17 runs from his half hour on the ground.

The lone star for the Australian second innings was Simon Katich who is still at the crease with 67 runs; easily the best performer for the Aussies today. So at the end of day’s play the cricket news may look gloomy for the Aussies, with a score of just 131 for six, however when you take into account the fact that they have a 189 run lead at this stage, we certainly seem to have a match on our hands! Whether the match will last 5 days; well that does not seem likely.
