Indian Cricket and without Sourav Ganguly - Impossible! It seems that BCCI could feel the pulse of rest of India when it invited him to be a part of Cricket board of the country in a big way. A Cricket360 analysis on why it is a smart move on the part of the Board.
It is commonly practiced and widely accepted that after an Indian Cricketer retires from active cricket, he will get involved in BCCI in some way or the other. So what the uproar is all about when Sourav gets nominated to the technical committee of Board of Control for Cricket in India? Well, when it comes to the selection of a cricket personality as Sourav Ganguly, it definitely is anything but ordinary. It is not in the priorities of BCCI officials to put up with a player who has an independent take on the issues relating to cricket in the country.
Sourav, as a team member and as a captain had always spoken his mind and affirmed his individual views regarding the BCCI decisions. Over and over again he dared to go against the Board, over and over again he got the penalties and every time made a come back with a bang. And now the rebel is going to be the part of the pack that just throws out of the mind the ex-cricketers who dared to show that he had an independent mind.
But dada is different; getting invited over a tête-à-tête by the board president on the first day of retirement, and getting nominated to the Board’s technical committee which is chaired by Gavaskar points toward one fact that dada is indispensable for Indian Cricket - before and after retirement. If Shashank Monahar’s invitation was a friendly gesture on the part of cricket administrators of the country, the offering of seat in such a crucial committee and that is just after retirement is definitely an indication that BCCI means business when it comes to the retaining of the best cricket brain of the country.
However some raised question over the legality of Sourav’s nomination to the committee, as he will continue to play domestic cricket and take part in the Indian Premier League, but it was Sunny who assured that he can as an ex-captain. Sourav himself is not very clear about his new role, although he says that he looks forward to the new job with Gavaskar as his senior colleague. At the end of his high profile cricket career, the ex captain loathes the idea of taking up yet another vocation that demands frequent traveling. He seemed to accept the offer because apparently the post doesn’t ask for traveling except for the meetings.
No doubt, Dada will excel in his new role the same way he dazzled throughout his career. Accepting the seat in Board’s technical committee is being viewed just as a small beginning - Sourav is expected to go the full cycle as a high profile cricket administrator when he takes over the reigns at the Cricket Association of Bengal when Jagmohan Dalmiya chooses to declare his innings.
