IPL Finds an Ardent Advocate in Steve Harmison Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Investigator

Lure of big money, or just the concern about a degrading England Cricket Team---what makes Harmison campaign for IPL? Let’s find it out with this Cricket360 article.

Steve HarmisonDoes England Cricket Team happen to be one of your favorites? Then you must be in a bad mood these days! But cheer up! Harmison has a magic bullet for the recovery of the health of your favorite team and it is the participation in Indian Premier League for the next season! This is because in Harmison’s opinion, India’s success against England in the ongoing ODI series is due to their exposure to twenty-20 matches.

Harmison says that Indian players have grossly benefited from their participation in Indian Premier League and the England should follow the suit and sign IPL, if they want to make it big in the upcoming cricket series. "Watching how the Indian players have gone about their skills in the current one-day series it is clear to me that playing in the IPL has helped them improve in vital areas and had a huge benefit on their team," was all that Harmison had to say about a visibly impressive Indian team.

Harmison feels these back to back victories in all the three ODIs came as a result of Player’s growing habituated to an aggressive cricket, so typical of IPL’s twenty-20 tournament. In his opinion, England will continue to lag behind in these areas if they do not get green signal from ECB for signing IPL and that would be a huge loss for England national team.

Harmison’s comments are likely to create some pressure on the ECB which is in an open row with the BCCI and bars the England players from playing for the Indian Premier League tournament. According to Harmison the positive effect of IPL and twenty-20 matches are evident in cases of some of the key Indian players such as Yusuf Pathan, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina who, Harmison thinks, have learnt from the high pressure demands and challenges of IPL. It is the participation in the IPL that enhanced the batsmen’s hunger for more runs and taught the bowlers to make effective use of the bowling tricks such as slower deliveries, yorkers, dead balls and so on instead of relying solely on the bowling speed. Now the batsmen are not content with striking a cricket scores in the bracket of 260 to 275 and wants to make it as high as at least 290 to 300.

Everything said, this Cricket360 reporter has little doubts over Harmison’s true intensions. Well, even if we agree that it is not the earning potential, but the learning potential of Indian premier League Tournament that attracts this ace pacer, but then why doesn’t he try it in England’s own twenty-20 tournament? After all you could learn better in a country that gave birth to the concept of limited over tournament. The answer will be best given by Harmison, but it is for sure, Harmison’s advocacy for joining IPL is going to further aggravate the bitterness between ECB and England team.
