Terror strike forces ICL call off World Series while Ranji Trophy and I- League fixtures in Mumbai are deferred
THE Indian Cricket League ( ICL) prematurely called of its World Twenty20
Series due to the latest terror attacks in Mumbai. The decision to call off the first leg of the second season was taken on Thursday evening at a high- level executive board meeting of the breakaway league in Ahmedabad. “ We have taken the decision of calling off the rest of the ICL World Series tourament.We believe that it is inappropiate to continue the Series under the given circumstances.
All players and officials are under approriate security,” executive board member and tournament director Kiran More informed. The ICL T20 World Series was at its fag end and was scheduled to conclude on Saturday, with just two league matches, considered as virtual semi- finals, and the final remaining to be contested. Earlier, the League had already called off Thursday’s match between ICL Pakistan and ICL Bangladesh in the wake of dastardly attacks in Mumbai. Asked if the tournament was postponed or totally called off, More said, “ The board has decided to call off the tournament and not postpone it. A decision on the trophy and other things will be taken in due course of time, he added. ICL chairman Kapil Dev said the decision of the ICL management to cancel the event was backed by all parties concerned.
Pak Ex- Captains Condemn Attack Pakistan former captains have condemned the terror attacks in Mumbai, describing such events as greatly damaging for international sports and cricket. Former skipper Wasim Akram said he was terrified to see Wednesday’s events. “ It is so terrifying to watch, so I can imagine what the people caught in the middle of these attacks must have felt,” he said. “ I think cricket is not that important, what is important is first people’s lives must be safeguarded. Unless there is proper security for players and officials I can understand reluctance of teams to play in such conditions,” he said.
Asif Cancels Visit Suspended Pakistani paceman Mohammad Asif cancelled his visit to Mumbai after he was told that hearing of the drugs inquiry tribunal of the Indian Premier League ( IPL) had been put off due to fresh terrorist attacks there. Asif, who was due to leave this morning with his lawyer Shahid Karim for the two- day hearing from November 29, said he had been told to remain in Pakistan.
Ranji Match Put Off The Elite Division Group A Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Hyderabad has been put off by a few days, the Cricket Board announced. The match, that was to be held in Mumbai between November 29 and December 2, would now be conducted from December 2- 5, the BCCI said.
I- League Ties Cancelled The last two first phase ties of the ONGC I- League to be held in Mumbai's Cooperage football ground in South Mumbai on November 29 and 30 also have been cancelled, according to the AIFF. The matches to be affected are: Mahindra United v Dempo SC, Goa ( Nov 29) and Mumbai FC v Mohammedan Sporting ( Nov 30). The new date will be fixed after reviewing the situation, said the release on the AIFF website.
Sailors Warned The organisers of the round- theworld Volvo Ocean Race have warned participants to be extra- vigilant ahead of their arrival in the Indian port of Kochi after a series of coordinated attacks in Mumbai. “ The stakeholders of the Volvo Ocean Race in Kochi... are currently being informed of the situation and advised to be extra vigilant with security,” the organisers said in a statement. The eight- strong racing fleet was just 800 nautical miles from the finish line of the race's second leg in Kochi.
