Carrying on from the first day of the second test match the Kiwis managed to add a measly 8 runs to their overnight score while rapidly losing their remaining 4 wickets on day two. Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey managed to add some luster to the day’s cricket news with their scores of 79 and 69 respectively and at the end of the day’s play the hosts were 241 for the loss of three wickets; just 30 runs short of the first innings total of the New Zealand Team.
As per our cricket update from Cricket360 yesterday, day one of the second test of the Trans Tasman Cup being played at the Adelaide Oval between hosts Australia and visitors New Zealand, was fairly unspectacular, with the visitors ending the day tamely with 262 runs on the board for the loss of 6 wickets. Carrying on the live scoreboard on the second day the Kiwis managed to add a measly 8 runs to their overnight score while rapidly losing the remaining 4 wickets in a manner that put up no resistance. Captain Daniel Vettori remained unbeaten on the modest score of 18; the visitors having managed to make the unimpressive innings total of 270 all out. After the rather disappointing showing from the Kiwis, the Aussies made a start; however they lost openers Simon Katich and Matthew Hayden, fairly early on; before the live scoreboard reached 50. Hayden continued his rather dismal run with the bat and did not distinguish himself in this, his landmark 100th test. He managed to make just 24 before getting run out. Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey however, managed to add some luster to the day’s cricket news with their scores of 79 and 69 respectively. Ponting, seemed in fine nick and he hit 13 boundaries in his score or 79 and made it look easy on a pitch that really not doing very much on this the second day of the second test match. In contrast, Hussey’s innings of 69 was less flamboyant and more hesitant but none the less important, not least because he is still at the crease. Ponting and Hussey added 106 runs for the third wicket partnership. This partnership steadied the Aussie innings and the hosts looked fairly in control of the live cricket at the end of day two, largely due to this solid partnership where in the contrasting styles of the two batsmen seemed to complement one another. Ponting was out to Iain O’Brien, caught by what Ponting termed as the ‘world’s tallest man’ and admittedly, Peter Fulton is rather tall. At the end of the day’s play Michael Clark with 43 and Hussey with 69 was at the crease, only 30 runs behind the first innings score of the Kiwis. Other than O’Brien, the only other New Zealand bowler to pick up a wicket was Vettori, who claimed the wicket of Simon Katich.
