Australia and New Zealand: Fresh Challenges Ahead Print E-mail

The Aussies can cheer about much of the cricket news of the Trans Tasman Series : Ricky Ponting showed his spark in the second test match, Brett Lee with his haul of 9 wickets in the second test match was nothing short of spectacular and Brad Haddin was really impressive with the bat. New Zealand on the other hand may not take much consolation from their performance as managed only 156, 177, 270 and 203 from their four innings in the series. None of their batsmen reached triple figures in any of those innings. While the Aussies will be confident going into their series against South Africa, the Kiwis will be less so going into their series against the West Indies.

As we at Cricket360 kept you abreast of the cricket updates of the Trans Tasman Cup being played in Australia, in which the Australian team triumphed quite emphatically and unequivocally over the visiting New Zealand team. The Aussies vanquished the Kiwis in no uncertain terms in each of the two test matches, held at the Gabba and at Adelaide oval.

The performance of the teams and the live cricket news from the series leads us to draw some conclusions; one that the Aussies seem to have bounced right back after their less than spectacular performance in India and second that the New Zealanders have quite a lot of introspection and improvement to do given their dismal performance in the series.

The Aussies can cheer about much of the cricket news from this series: Ricky Ponting showed his spark in the second test match, Brett Lee with his haul of 9 wickets in the second test match was nothing short of spectacular and then there was Brad Haddin who was really impressive with the bat (top scorer for Australia with 169 runs and man of the match for the second test) and appears to be a worthy to his illustrious predecessor Adam Gilchrist.

New Zealand on the other hand may not take much consolation from their performance as they did not have much to cheer from their live scoreboards: in their 4 innings of the two tests they managed only 156, 177, 270 and 203 respectively. None of their batsmen reached triple figures in any of those innings. Flashes of brilliance were few and far between if indeed there were any. The bowling sparkled but only in bits.

While the Aussies will be fairly confident going into their upcoming series of six test matches against South Africa they would do well not to underestimate the South Africans who are at a formidable 2nd position in the test ranking right now.

New Zealand now has their work cut out for them before their series against the West Indies; none of the aspects of their game looking very good right now. A subdued Daniel Vettori said that application was the key for his team, which in his opinion did not lack talent: "Application is the big key because we all acknowledge that they're pretty talented guys. The top six are all extremely talented players. We need to find a way to turn that talent into consistency, scoring runs, and in the end it does come down to application."

We at Cricket360.com wish the New Zealanders all the best so that they can put up a better fight against the Windies than they did against the Aussies, which frankly was a rather tame and one sided affair. It was hardly in the tradition of the great tussles of the teams down under that we have come to expect.
