The Australian team may not be the same invincible unit of international cricket that it was famous for being for so long; but anyone that underestimates this team will do so at their own peril and certainly the English team cannot afford to do that now; their wins against the West Indians notwithstanding. Meanwhile Aussie captain Ricky Ponting has come out in favour of test cricket in direct contradiction of the sentiments expressed by his West Indian counterpart Chris Gayle.

In its frantic effort to fill the void left by Matthew Hayden, cricket Australia has been experimenting with one pair of opening batsman or the other. Now they have penciled in on Phillip Hughes, who is among the seven new players who have been awarded the playing contract by Australian cricket authorities for the year 2009-10.The other players who have been awarded the contract include Callum Ferguson, Graham Manou, Peter Siddle, Andrew McDonald and Marcus North, who have been awarded their first national contracts while off-spinner Nathan Hauritz returned to the 25-player list.

Perhaps the most famous of all iconic test cricket series on the ICC’s cricket calendar, the Ashes has a history that dates back to 1882, when the fist Ashes series was played between England and Australia and one of the most famous cricket rivalries ever in international cricket was born. The name ‘Ashes’ refers to a terracotta urn that was presented to the English captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melbourne women, which was said to contain the ashes of an item of cricket equipment, possibly a bail, ball or stump.
