On the eve of Loksabha election all the parties are in race for acquiring star candidates to contest election for them. Congress has roped into Azhar. Is it another cricket rumor or is Azzu really taking his plunge into politics! This Cricket360 article tries to find the answer.

If Amar Singh got his prize catch in Munnabhai Sanjay Dutt, Sonia Gandhi was smart enough to pick up Azhar for her race for the next Loksabha election. The latest cricket rumor that is making rounds is all about Azhar’s joining congress. If everything goes according to the plan, former Indian captain is going to contest the next Loksabha election on Congress ticket as a candidate from Hyderabad.

Although the media was quick to grab the scoop and make great cricket news out of it, still it is in the stage of speculation, as Azhar himself expressed surprised when asked about his possible entry in politics. It will be worthwhile to mention here that this player’s visit to Telengana Rashtra Samiti President K. Chandrasekhar Rao in February 2007 triggered off similar cricket rumor of his possible alliance with TRS.

However, this time the speculation was based on Azhar’s visit to Sonia Gandhi. The report claims, that the former Indian captain expressed to the Congress leader his willingness of contesting Loksabha polls. However, though he is one of the most successful captains of team India, theoretically Azhar does not make an ideal poll candidate as the match fixing case has not yet been decided. The BCCI accused him of getting involved in match fixing scam and imposed a ban on him back in 2000. Azhar chose to fight a legal battle against the Board and that battle still continues. However, as great cricket player who represented India in 99 tests and amassed a huge cricket score of 6,215 test runs, Azhar has millions of fans in his own city, Hyderabad, as well as all throughout the nation.

If Azhar joins politics in reality, then it will be the beginning of another innings of his life. After he bid good bye to international cricket, he along with his wife Sangeeta Bijlani started an event management company. The couple also runs a health club in the upscale Banjara Hills Area. Though this cricket veteran brushes aside the possibility as mere cricket rumor, the buzz gave rise to two important questions: Will the Congress take active interest in lifting the ban and whether the veteran cricketer will be able to bring back the Hyderabad seat in the Congress’s kitty? Cricket360.com predicts the positive keeping in mind this world class cricketer’s popularity in his home city. But we all have to wait for few more months to see how actually the things shape up.
