In a rare and not very characteristic moment of humility, swashbuckling Delhi batsman Virender Sehwag said that he is not half as good as Tendulkar! In fact Sehwag said that he would be honoured to be viewed as Sachin’s shishya or student since he himself grew up watching and idolising Sachin, his style, his shots, which he always tried to copy. He was all praises for the batting maestro whom he admires not only for his unique style of batting but also his humility and his entire persona.
In the recent cricket news, Indian fans have something to cheer about as both Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag move up a notch in the ICC cricket rankings. We at Cricket360 are certainly cheered to know that both well beloved batsmen are doing well; both in the top 20. However what is making even bigger headlines in Indian cricket news is that in a rare and not very characteristic moment of humility, swashbuckling Delhi batsman Virender Sehwag said that he is not half as good as Tendulkar! In an interview that Sehwag had with PTI, the dashing batsman seemed to be in an unusually self-effacing frame of mind when he alluded to the undoubted greatness of Sachin Tendulkar with whom he is often compared. And this is a definite switch of attitude from the time when Sehwag had made cricket news by saying that the only difference between the two players was that of bank balance! While anyone would readily admit to the fact that Sehwag is a tremendously talented and entertaining player, Tendulkar is in a whole other league! So perhaps it is fitting that Sehwag should now amend his earlier statement with this one saying that he made that earlier statement in jest! In fact Sehwag would now be honoured to be viewed as Sachin’s shishya or student since he himself grew up watching and idolising Sachin, his style, his shots, which he always tried to copy. After all imitation is the most sincere form of flattery! In his interview that made so much cricket news, Sehwag was asked what was it about Tendulkar that he wished he had. To this he replied, “Everything. And it’s just not about his unique style of batting. It is his humility, his entire persona. I really feel his records will never be broken. For somebody to do it, he would not only need the talent and longevity but also a rare luck with injuries. And that still might not be enough…… The equations you need to have in your favour to get past his 83 international centuries and nearly 30,000 runs (and still counting) are nearly impossible.” Bravo Sehwag! We at Cricket360.com could not have said it betters ourselves and we applaud Sehwag’s honesty and humility in offering such unqualified praise for a teammate. This indicates not only great camaraderie within the team but a refreshing lack of petty jealousies within and a willingness to encourage one another’s strength’s and support weaknesses.
