Tales from Sehwag: "The Nawab of Najafgarh" Print E-mail

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

The Nawab of Najafgarh hums Sai Baba bhajans and Kishore Kumar songs as he waits for the ball to be delivered by the bowler because he wants his mind to be absolutely free while facing up to a bowler. He also has a restaurant which has dishes such as Multan Ke Sultan Ki Tikdi, meaning dish for three persons, which alludes to his triple century in Multan and is priced at 309 rupees!

As one of India’s most entertaining and dashing batsmen Virender Sehwag is often in the cricket news headlines. Known for his unorthodox and attacking style, he is often in the news for his own very unique approach to the game of cricket, which earns him kudos as often as brickbats. He has even been described by the Wisden Cricketers' Almanac as the "most exciting opener in the world". Recently he was in the cricket news for praising Sachin Tendulkar as his idol and Greg Chappell as ‘untrustworthy’.

These are not the only things that make the Nawab of Najafgah the colorful character that he is both on and off the cricket pitch. In a recent interview of his, Sehwag shared his batting modus operandi with the interviewer, saying that he never lost sleep over an upcoming match and does not worry about the pitch. Instead, what he does is hum Sai Baba bhajans and Kishore Kumar songs as he waits for the delivery from the bowler! And for choice, he picks those of Kishore Kumar’s songs which have been picturized on Amitabh Bachchan.

"I want my mind to be absolutely free while facing up to a bowler. I try to hum songs, Sai Baba bhajans and Kishore Kumar songs, especially those pictured on Amitabh Bachchan till the bowler is about to deliver. I then tell myself: watch it. I try to sing songs as perfectly as possible in order to keep my mind completely uncluttered," said the inimitable Sehwag! This probably explains how he always seems so calm and unconcerned at the crease; he is relaxed enough to sing!

Among the more interesting personal details of the Nawab of Najafgarh, is the fact that he owns a restaurant much like his idol Sachin Tendulkar whom he imitates in more ways than one apparently!  Sehwag Favourites, is the name of his eponymous restaurant, which opened in 2005 in the Fun Republic Cineplex in Delhi. Since Sehwag is a vegetarian, so is his restaurant. A majority of the items on the menu are named after cricketing themes related to his memorable innings, such as Multan Ke Sultan Ki Tikdi, meaning dish for three persons, which alludes to his triple century in Multan and is priced at 309 rupees!

was also impressed to learn about his philanthropic activities which include working for UNICEF.
