Andre Nel Courts Controversy Again Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Investigator

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

Andre Nel has frequently courted cricket controversy and this time it is because of using “crude and abusive language” that the South African player has been handed a three match ban. His misconduct earned him a ban from three local Pro20 and inter-provincial matches. It is not clear yet whether Nel will be appealing this decision to ban him for three matches. Earlier he was brought before the match referee for making rude and offensive facial gestures to West Indian cricket Chris Gayle. In that instance he was fined half his match fees.

Andre Nel, South African fast bowler, has recently been in the news for the wrong reasons, earning himself a three match ban. Nel has frequently courted cricket controversy and this time it is because of using “crude and abusive language” that the South African player has been handed the three match ban. His misconduct earned him a ban from three local Pro20 and inter-provincial matches. Cricket360 is not as yet able to report whether Nel will be appealing this decision to ban him for three matches.

Known for his aggression on the field, Andre Nel earned a formidable reputation for himself and was known to be a bit of a nemesis for the great Brian Lara, whom he dismissed on some 8 instances!

Cricket360.com found that the present ban faced is not Andre Nel’s first run in with cricket controversy. In February 2001 he hit the headlines after bursting into tears when he felled Allan Donald with a blistering bouncer in a domestic first-class match. Once when the South Africa A players were touring Australia, Nel was pulled over for drunk driving. He was then asked to return home. He was also found to be guilty of substance abuse when he was discovered to have been using marijuana on a tour to the West Indies.

As if these off field antics weren’t enough, Nel has been in the throes of an on field misconduct controversy before now. Once he was brought before the match referee for making rude and offensive facial gestures to West Indian cricket Chris Gayle. In this instance he was fined half his match fees.

It is difficult for people that know the man to reconcile this aggressive, hostile, belligerent on field persona with Andre Nel the person; i.e. his persona off the field, which is genial and charming. This Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality Nel attributes to his alter ego. In his own words, he has an alternate ego, a second personality called Gunther. "Gunther is a guy who lives in the mountains and doesn't get enough oxygen to the brain and that makes him crazy.” Apparently Gunther takes over when Nel walks on to the cricket field. This is what makes him all worked up and aggressive when he walks on to the cricket field. Off it, he is calm and polite by all accounts.
