Andrew Symonds will be shaving his famous dreadlocks in aid of a fund raiser event, World’s Greatest Shave. The Leukemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events. 100,000 people across the country will shave or colour their hair. The funds raised will help the Leukemia Foundation to provide practical care and support to patients and families living with leukemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. It will also fund research into better treatments and hopefully cures.
Among the less weighty issues to do the rounds among cricketing circles these days is the cricket news of Andrew Symonds and his fabled dreadlocks. Now Symonds with his trademark dreadlocks (to say nothing of his omnipresent sun block which combine to give him the appearance of a not very friendly joker), is among the most unique looking and instantly recognizable persons in international cricket. Now the Aussie cricketer has announced that he will be cutting off his famous dreadlocks which he has sported for the past five years! Symonds will be doing this in aid of a fund raiser event, World’s Greatest Shave. So it is for a worthy cause that Symmo will be losing his well known dreadlocks. CEO of the Leukemia foundation, Peter Johnstone has articulated his thanks to the famous (or do we mean infamous) Aussie player: "By generously putting his trademark dreads on the line, Andrew Symonds will be supporting leukemia patients and their families,". Symonds will hopefully be raising $10,000 with his gesture. Well we at Cricket360 certainly think that any hairstyle change for the volatile Aussie can only be for the better! Symmo’s ‘do’ is not the most prepossessing in international cricket that is for sure! He also hopes to gain some anonymity with this change in hair style. The Aussie is currently facing a lean patch in his cricket career, having suffered from controversy both on and off the field: bad cricket playing form, problems relating to alcohol as well as a knee surgery from which he is recovering. The knee surgery is currently keeping the all rounder from fulfilling his bowling duties, limiting him only to batting right now. We at Cricket360.com will be watching the shaven and shorn Symonds with interest to see if, like the biblical figure Samson (of Samson and Delilah fame), Symmo’s strength and talent are tied up in his hair. We will be watching to see if cricket prowess is affected in the same way that Samson lost his strength after losing his locks!
