Tension brews even before the Indian tour to Sri Lanka starts. A few Tamil parties want the tour to be cancelled as they point to the alleged massacre of Tamils in the island nation. They are receiving support from the ruling party and Advocates Forum for Social Justice as the voices demanding the tour to be called grow stronger in Tamil Nadu. The BCCI however is paying no heed to this hue and cry.
Politics mars the upcoming India-Sri Lanka tour even before it kicks off. There seem to be shallow clouds of doubt over the tour for which team India will leave on Monday. A couple of Tamil parties are urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India to cancel the tour citing the alleged massacre of Tamils by the Sri Lankan Army in the neighboring country. The two jingoist parties are the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Dalit Panthers. Things parties do to gain political mileage! The two parties staged a protest outside the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association office located at the Chidambaram Stadium. Ruling party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam although hasn’t moved a similar call, they have been urging the Centre to send a high-level delegation to Sri Lanka to assess reports of the killings. Fuelling the fire, the Advocates Forum for Social Justice has also raised the same demand. It wants the tour to be called off as it staged a protest in front of Chennai High Court. According to K. Balu, the president of the group, there was no justification in playing cricket in Sri Lanka. “Just like India's tour to Pakistan was called off after the Mumbai attacks, the tour to Sri Lanka should also be called off," he said. "If the tour is not called off, we will stage a dharna outside the residence of two senior BCCI officials living in Chennai, N. Srinivasan (the secretary), and K. Srikkanth (chairman of selectors),” he said. On the other hand, the BCCI remains unfazed by all the brouhaha. A Board hotshot said, “We always abide by whatever decision the relevant government agencies take. We follow their instructions and in this case there has been no directive not to tour Sri Lanka.” Indian tours to Sri Lanka have been safe and secure by far till now and this one also appears to be free from any threats. But Cricket360 opines the board and players should keep a tight tab on the developments.
