Gautam Gambhir (62), Suresh Raina (54) and MS Dhoni (61*) contributed to the Indian victory. Jayasuriya was adjudged the Man of the Match, reports Cricket360.
India start the 5 ODI series against Sri Lanka on a high note as they defeat the hosts by 6 wickets in the opening ODI today in Dambulla. Sri Lanka managed 246 for 6 with the highest contribution from Sanath Jayasuriya (107) as India bettered them by getting 247 for a loss of 4 wickets with 1.5 overs still to go. India sailed smoothly to the target thanks to the half-centuries from Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni. India won the toss and elected to field first. They got the breakthrough very early in the match as TM Dilshan (0) was run out at the team total of zero. The situation stabilized quickly then as Kumar Sangakkara (44) and Jayasuriya built a 118-run second-wicket stand. The runs kept trickling in; the wickets fell every now and then as Sri Lanka built its innings solely on Jayasuriya’s courageous 107. Ishant Sharma was India’s most successful bowler with his spell of 35 runs for 3 wickets. In response, India lost Sachin Tendulkar early in the innings at a score of 13. Losing Sachin is generally a sign of worse things to follow but Gambhir (62) and Raina (54) withheld the innings strongly. It was speculated that the Murali-Mendis spin duo will cast doom on the Indian batting line-up in a similar way it did last year which didn’t happen. Gambhir succumbed to Muralitharan at 126, after which Raina quickly departed in a succession of 15 runs. The last wicket India lost was Yuvraj Singh (23) at 181. Dhoni (61*) and Rohit Sharma (25*) led India to victory as they chased the highest total in a day game in Dambulla. Sanath Jayasuriya was adjudged the Man of the Match for today’s game. At a ripe age of 40, Jayasuriya is going great guns. Sri Lanka entered the series on a triumphant note as they come to play India after defeating Pakistan by 2-1 last week in Pakistan itself. However, the fatigue was apparent as they got little time to rest before the series against India.
