Champions Trophy to be Held Every 4 Years from Now Print E-mail

In the hindsight it is one of the best news that ICC could have announced in favour of the beleaguered cricket establishment of Pakistan. It was denied the rights to hold the Champions Trophy, as the teams from countries like Australia, South Africa and New Zealand refused to travel to Pakistan citing security concerns. Politics and geo political positioning may be the reason Pakistan was denied an opportunity to host the Champions Trophy.

But ICC has tried to do justice to Pakistan Cricket Board and to the cause of cricket as well, by taking a decision by its executive board where by it took two monumental decisions, which would convey the message, that ICC still has bite. The decisions taken at the meeting convened in Perth would remove the stigma of jinx associated with Champions Trophy. The decisions are that henceforth event will now be held after every four years instead of its biennial schedule. Secondly, Pakistan, who were supposed to be the next hosts, will pocket hosting rights for this year’s tournament regardless of where it is held, which amounts to around $6 million.

The two decisions though are divergent in retrospect. The first decision would be the most positive fallout for the cause of cricket. To conduct the tournament every four year would ensure that the political disturbances would not have such a big effect on the decision making process relating to participation in a match, as any conflict would not have its effect for a period of four years. It is altogether a different matter that a skirmish may develop on the eve of the conduct of tournament. But it is an eventuality, which cannot be denied. In such a context even life is ephemeral. So, Pakistan may at least hope that the cause of cricket in Pakistan would be served by this decision.

The second decision may be contested and it may lead to development of controversy, as the next country, which has been given the option to host Champions Trophy would not be agreeable to share the booty. Tournaments of this kind these days generate quite a large amount of booty, which makes the balance sheets of cricket board robust. So, the next country that would be asked to host Champions Trophy may not be agreeable to share the booty, and this would be a really tight rope walking for ICC. ICC would have to pull rabbit out of the box to face this storm.
