As he followed in the illustrious footstep of his predecessor in the cricketing arena, Steve Waugh is going to follow him in the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame as well. Steve Waugh is going to be honored with Allan Border Medal on Tuesday night and after this award he would be inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.
The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame came into being, after proposal about establishing the same was done for the first time by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) in 1995 and later with the help of Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria was officially opened in 1996. Since it came into vogue in 1996, 30 players have been bestowed with this owner, and have found their names being engraved on the roll call, including 10 in 1996 themselves. The process of selection to this august list is nothing but performance in the past, and passion for the cricket. So, if a player has been selected to the Hall of Fame, it is based on his status, stature and his record in cricket in terms of the statistical achievements. The other criteria for inclusion in this list is that the player can be considered for selection when he must have been retired from international cricket for a minimum of five years to be eligible for selection. Those who have made it to the list after the awards came into being include: 1996: Fred Spofforth, John Blackham, Victor Trumper, Clarrie Grimmett, Bill Ponsford, Sir Donald Bradman, Bill OReilly, Keith Miller, Ray Lindwall and Dennis Lillee; 2000: Warwick Armstrong, Neil Harvey and Allan Border; 2001: Bill Woodfull and Arthur Morris; 2002: Stan McCabe and Greg Chappell; 2003: Lindsay Hassett and Ian Chappell; 2004: Hugh Trumble and Alan Davidson; 2005: Clement Hill and Rod Marsh; 2006: Monty Noble and Bob Simpson; 2007: Charles Macartney and Richie Benaud; 2008: George Giffen and Ian Healy; 2009: Stephen Waugh. From this list it can be deduced that the awards are not an annual affair, as after 1996, the selection into the last was made only in 2000. The first list is a tribute to all the legends that have given a definite shape to the Australian cricket and made it what it is now. This list could also serve as an inspiration for other Mecca's in different parts of the cricketing world to establish there own hall of fames. Like Lords in England could do it, Mumbai in India could also emulate the same.
