For the first time in the ODI series against South Africa, Australian top order batsmen took a solid stand on the crease and that paved the way for them to claim a solace win at the end of the series and also to better their ODI ranking scalping the 2nd position. Chasing the mammoth total of 303, Proteas too looked in track but only to collapse in the middle and they were all out for 256 in 45.5 overs. A 47 run victory handed Aussies a comfortable 3-2 stance in the series.

Australia could not save the 5 match ODI series against South Africa as they were put down to a 3-1 defeat after Gibbs (110) led South Africa to a 61 runs victory in the fourth match of the series. After Gibbs made the foundation with his 21st ton it was Steyn who curbed the chances of the Aussies to remain alive in the series. In reply to the target of 318 set by the hosts, the fight for survival by the visitors ended in the 46th over with 256 runs on the scoreboard. The series win also earned RSA the top spot in ODI ranking which they were holding prior to the commencement of the series.

With the retirement of some of the best known names in international cricket from the Australian team in the recent past, Ricky Ponting is the only remaining member of the old guard and the Aussie team now bears a very different look from a couple of years ago. There are many young, inexperienced new players in the team which is currently in a state of flux. The question being debated in the cricket news now is if Ricky Ponting is the man to guide the team through this phase of transition and rebuild it so that it becomes once again, a force in international cricket, the way it used to be.

South Africa overcame all odds in the third game of the 5 match ODI series against Australia to register a 25 runs victory at the end. Helped by a late hour spur, the Proteas could make it into a respectable score of 289 for six and in reply Aussies could keep the chase alive for 261 runs only in 50 overs despite a 97 runs stand between Hopes (63) and Ferguson (63) for the sixth wicket. South Africa leads the series 2-1 with two games left.

Parnell, playing in his second ODI and Steyn piloted Proteas to a convincing 7 wickets win in the second match of the 5 game ODI series against Australia at Centurion. The accurate and penetrating bowling packed the Australians in just 40.2 overs for a meager 131 with Parnell and Steyn sharing 4 ‘kangaroos’ each. In reply Smith and Co. took reprisal of the first ODI by making the game one sided to celebrate victory in just 26.2 overs. The 5 match series is evenly placed at 1-1 now.
